well i did a seach, and the closest i got to an answer, was the discussion about gold ammo.

what id like to know: what types of shells were used from the ww1 to the end of ww2 era.

and ofc what do people expect to see in game?

im quite interested in the characteristics of shells aswell. as fa as i can tell. shells like HEAT in wot, dont perform at all the way they do in real life. they simply stick some aditional pen on them and thats it.

I hesitate to refer folks to other web sites but I've never been steered wrong by this one:

The link is to the explanation of ammo types for naval weapons.

And a great picture:

The "standard" round i assume is a variant of the APHE round designed to punch through a ships armor then detonate inside, this was the most efficient thing to do with the sheer size of naval rounds.

Long version:  Go to the link Capcon gave.

Short version:   AP and HE were the two most common types of shells.   I'd be surprised if they went much further than that in the game.

In the real world you had massive variation on individual shell types, the type of explosive filler, where/how it was fuzed, etc.   But ultimately you came down to "Biggest bang you can throw" (HE/Common) and "something to penetrate armor" (AP) along with "what makes it decide to explode" (VT fuze vs time fuzed vs nose contact vs others)

Each Navy used a different system.  CPC shells were common for British ships.

The fun part of AP shells was that if you shot unarmored targets (like destroyers or lightly armored cruisers or if you hit an unarmored portion of a ship), you'd sometimes get a shell that passed all the way through without going kaboom.   So shooting AP at destroyers would actually do less damage to the destroyer than if you shot it with HE/Common ammo because the shell would just punch straight through the ship..

As this thread takes shape, there are terms often used that I realize some may not understand, or have limited understanding.  This is also applicable to other threads discussing ship manufacturing, armor and so forth related to Metallurgical properties.  Here's a link that may help with those terms.

well i think it likely that, like in wot, we will see up to 5 different variants, including 2 forms of gold ammo. what im hoping for, is to see a bit more attention to detail of the various types, as it can have a much more profound effect on ships than their tank counterparts.

Beehive shells would be a nice addition as well. Keep those pesky plans far, far away.

I can't find any other sources on this other than wikipedia. I think it's all right though. Have a read,

The major caliber versions of anti-air shells were not exactly what would be called a "great success".  It disrupts the rate of fire for the exposed AA guns, major caliber gun rate of fire is low, and main guns don't exactly have good aircraft tracking speeds...

Now, AA shells for 6" and under, they are a bit more useful.

Lastly, there is a way to use the main guns against torpedo bombers, fire at minimum elevation, the impacts raise waterspouts that if the plane flies into them will pretty well deep six the aircraft.

I remember seeing that on Battle 360. Major, you raise an excellent point.

Battle 360...have not seen that in a long time.  Of course that method will only work if they include the physics for it.  If memory serves, they said waves would have no impact on the ships in terms of handling and accuracy.  If that is the case, I doubt splashes will kill swordfish...  We may need to ask that question in the dev Q&A thread.

I enjoy Battle 360. Same with Greatest Tank Battles. I watch what I can on youtube. I think this fits, right after this post of course,

Start on shell types, make it to tank battles.

You're welcome.   :Smile_great:

There's a ton of references buried in this forum, that should be compiled into a single thread resource.  Maybe someone will create it, or add it to an already helpful thread.  We'll see.

I can't help thinking that if you're trying to fire beehive shells from the main guns to defend yourself against planes, then something has gone horribly horribly wrong with the match.

you really have a point there.... much like the 8 per side arty games of wot. something like a two thirds carrier game QQ
they did limitarty in wot now tho.
