Is Snowstorm WGs way of testing reduced gun bloom? times?

Well I got a snowstorm battle for the second time, this time in my Harekaze. In the snowstorm, the gun bloom is reduced from 20 seconds to 7 seconds. People very quickly figured this out and the result was much more gun-use by destroyers in general. Don't know what it does to cruiser bloom time.

WG in the past said that they had "tested" reducing the gun bloom time, but nobody believed them because their explanation made no sense, 7 seconds is in the range that people like myself had said might be good to have DDs gun bloom reduced to.

This would be a good way for WG to test reducing the gun bloom time. They get real world data and they can always pull it if it is horribly unbalanced like they did bastion game mode.

That said, this could just be coincidental and WG accidentally did something that players have asked for a long time, at least on a small scale.

What does everyone else think?

I think Flamu mentionned that everyship that fire in that snowstorm have his bloom time reduced from 20 to around 7 sec. Visibility is garbage but I think you also lose a bit of dispersion.

So no, it's not a bug but working as intended.

Haven't been in a "snowstorm" battle yet, but from what I've seen it appears to work much as Cyclone visibility did when that first came in: if your visibility went down to 8km you saw nothing (ships, islands, whatever) out of the fog until you got that close. Personally I wish they would go back to that standard.... having visibility reduced only for ships while you can still clearly see terrain all across the map is silly. :Smile_facepalm:

I have had issue with the bloom effect ever since it was part of the solution to OWSF.

No one disagreed in taking away a mechanic that allowed a ship to fire at another one without that ship being able to fire back - unfair. So why replace it with the bloom effect that then allows a DD in a knife fight with another DD to be targeted by CAs and BBs (who it has no chance of hitting back because of range). I mean really :Smile_amazed: Then look at the actual affect at a DD firing its rounds at an well armoured BB with heals that do away with a proportion of fire damage, and then look at the multiple ships firing at both DDs and what damage they can do. It never really made sense to me.

I'm assuming that is what the change to BB AP is about; WG finding a way to keep the bloom time up so CAs can do what they are supposed to (kill the enemy DDs), whilst not allowing too much damage to be done by a BB AP shot that can take a large amount of damage off of a DD.

No it is not! The recently added weather effects is the result of request for it that began back in Beta testing.

If you recall, they tested the storm mechanic in a scenario not too long ago.

I don’t play scenarios. So no I didn’t.

  • Description: The battleship holds are filled with gold, and the ships are on a raid through the Atlantic to the American shores. The enemy has sent their best forces to stop the convoy. A thunderstorm is gaining strength at the expected encounter point. Use the weather conditions wisely to gain an advantage over the superior forces of the enemy.
  • Goal: Escort the squadron led by flagship Rouan to the designated sector. Make sure the gold is transported safely.

It was this one.

I played a lot of battles this weekend - just 1 battle away from completing the black Friday box thing for 50K base XP, but I was only in ONE battle with a snowstorm.  That was Islands of Ice in my GK in CO-op getting the win for that 15 win unique upgrade quest.  I was the only human in the battle, by the way.

It was a great look and very "realistic;" at least as I imagine how it would be.  Better than the cyclone effect, which should have pelting rain and waves etc.  Would sure like to see more of the snowstorms in battles.

And yes, the Thunderstorm was better than the cyclone effect.
