How do you manage commanders?

Might be a dumb question, but do you have multi commanders for a ship tier line or just use 1 maybe 2 for the entire line. For example I'm leveling my commander to eventually get to the Bismark and her secondary build. Will that not work for other ships in the same line or do i need to start leveling another for maybe a "survivablity" spec for T9-T10. Thanks

Generally, I use one main captain leveling them up the line and have another for the ship that I liked, that I kept as I proceed up the line. As far as the Bismark build you should be fine building a secondary build. It works up the line from there.

Ditto.  When I first started playing, I unfortunately didn't want to spend any time or doubloons retraining existing commander for new ships, so I always recruited new ones.  That caused me to have tons of 6-10 pt commander on my Japanese cruisers (one of my first lines), but no high skill commander.

I've changed to starting with one commander and moving him to each new ship I unlock in the line as I grind up.  When retraining I choose the 200k credit 50% retrain, then use elite commander XP to complete the retraining for the new ship.  Most lines don't need a skill reshuffle more than once or at most twice, as you grind up the line.

Then, if I encounter a mid tier ship I really like that I'd like to keep playing, I'll recruit a new commander for it, while keeping my high skill commander on my higher tier ship I'm grinding.

As for the Germans, a secondary spec commander will work pretty well from Bayern up.  Bayern won't get the super accuracy from manual secondaries that the tier VII+ ships will, so you might leave that for your last skill you acquire.

Yes. The only exception is if I have a 10+ point commander from a reward or arsenal that I'm putting on a new line. Tiers 1-4 go so quickly that I just put a new captain on those and wait to assign the 10 pointer until get to T5. Otherwise that captain will constantly be in retraining until T5 anyway.

Once you get your first tier 8 ship, join a clan and play some clan battles.  If you do, all of your captains get free respecs. That may help with captains whose lines that have different optimal skills as you go up the line (secondary builds, Mogami IFHE, etc).

It depends. My main line is the USN one. I have a captain that I took from T6 to T10. Now he's a 19 pt AA specialist, and works my Montana and the premium USN BBs (MO, AL, AZ, and TX). I'm currently leveling a second captain for the line, who will be survivability spec. For cruisers, more interesting. I have a DM captain for my heavy cruisers, and a CL captain with IFHE, CE, and AFT for the light cruisers. But, I also really like the Helena, so there's a second captain just for that ship.

I'll be going up the RU cruiser line next, so I have a 10 pt that I'll take to the Moskva, we'll see if I keep any of the ships on the way. But they would have to get their own captain.

The Bismark is interesting. The secondary build is fun, but the survivability build is probably more useful. I don't intend on going past the Bismark so I run secondaries. However, you should probably ask the KMS guys whether that's viable for the FDG and GK.

I'm a ship hoarder collector, so I keep every ship I get. So the ship in each line at the top of the grind has a Cmdr that moves up the line. I also recruit and plan out Cmdrs for the ships that are staying.

Let's look a PA as it is a simple line.

I have just unlocked the T7 Gadjah Mada in the last month. I had a 7pt Cmdr that I have been working on that became the permanent Cmdr for the T6 Fushun. My 10pt Cmdr I got in a Santa box with Huanghe and my 10pt Dasha PA Cmdr from the Anniversary event both moved to Gadjah Mada. Dasha PA is eventually going to be in the T10 Yueyang and the other 10pt Cmdr will be the permanent Gadjah Mada Cmdr. When I get the T8 Hsienyang, I will need to grind up a 10pt+ Cmdr for the permanent Cmdr of that ship. I have a 3pt Anshan Cmdr right now, so he will be ground/ECXP lifted to 10 pts to be the Hsienyang Cmdr. Then Chung Mu will need at least a 10 pt Cmdr, so I will work on that in the future as well.

I have a lot of 10pt IJN Cmdrs from the 2016 ARP event that I have planned out to fill spots. I picked up some Dasha and Space Cmdrs to fill in some spots in lines and I have picked up 3 Halloween Cmdrs from this event to be slotted into a spot. The Ovechkin Cmdrs, I got the two 10pt Cmdrs, will fill in on DDs.

I keep a text file of all my ships and Cmdrs, here are two ships.

7Fushun DD   28.7k  PT, LS, SE, (CE, EM, SI, BFT, PM)

**10Gadjah Mada DD  16.3k  PT, LS, SE, CE (IFHE, SI, AR)  1.4k [17.5k/11k/12k Hsienyang 110k]  Dasha PA (T10)

The Fushun permanent Cmdr is 7pts. I have 28.7k Cmdr XP to go to get to 8 pts. Then I list the skills he has and the skills I plan to get in ().

For the Gadjah Mada, it is the same, except that the ** means the ship is still stock. One * means it is fully upgraded, but grinding for the next ship. The 1.4k after the skills is the ship XP I currently have earned and the [17.5k/11k/12k Hsienyang 110k] are the costs of the stock modules and the final grind cost to Hsienyang. Dasha PA is the primary Cmdr and she is going to the T10 in the line.

Track them on an excel sheet.

Have at least one 19 point commander in each represented group except Commonwealth, Italy, and Poland; sometimes more, (USN, IJN.)

Some ships have a dedicated commander, such as Mikasa Warspite, and Bogue, others are just whoever happens to be there.

Work on unlocking your first 19 point commander. Then, play that Commander every day stacking signal and cammo bonus and the daily 50% win bonus, concentrating on Commander XP, which will become Free Commander XP that can be used on any commander.

You can use that XP to retrain commanders or increase skill points, and very quickly you'll build up a stable of 10+ commanders. Once you unlock your 2nd 19 point commander, again, stack all bonuses you can.

Soon, you'll have a large number of 19 point commanders, and worries about where to place commanders is a thing of the past.

Also, when you get commanders with special skills, you can get them to 19 points very fast, by using the Commander Elite XP.
