Thoughts on Terrain and Maps

In WOT players have the luxury of Terrain to hide behind. But will they have that in WoWS?

If they just have flat ocean then it will be just a slugfest.

Different types of terrain I thought might work in this game are:

- Fog clouds - They can act like trees which ships can disappear in

- Coast Line - Rock Formations - BIg enough for ships to hide behind

- Straights - Small Isles and Islands which give cover

- Island - One big island in the middle

- Middle of Ocean - Just flat out slug fest

- Stormy Seas - Small waves can make ships harder to spot

- Hurricane - Big waves can hide ships and reduce visibility

Anybody else have any ideas?

Have you read the Q&A topic on info on this already up?

"Q: Is there going to be weather on release?

A: There is going to be a wheather, but no guarantee for it to be in release version - though later it is very possible.",

Sounds more like Environment will be something cosmetic to the game, rather than a real factor that will affect outcomes of battles.

Land will surely have a large impact on the game given the missions we will likely be performing it will be a key ingredient in most matches. Ships rarely met in open sea, for as big as the fleets we have where, the Ocean was quite a bit bigger. ;)

I'd assume weather will play a roll later with swells making ships harder to target, and harder to shoot at as your ship rocks up and down in the waves, not to mention the mentioned visbility reduction. I don't know how much fog would play a roll in the Pacific theater, as I don't recall many instances where it played a rol

As someone who is interested in game design, I wonder how they will keep the game from turning into a slug fest, with the ships with the most range and firepower dominating. Without developing some sort of balancing features which give the other ships some sort of advantage all players will gravitate towards heavier battleships like they do heavier tanks in WOT.

There wouldn't be much point in putting other ships in as people would not play them if they did not have some sort of balancing features. Terrain being one of them. There are only so many options you can have if you do not factor changes in the environment...

I think they may not affect the ships themselves, as how would you build in wave into a game? The rendering CPU required would be ridiculous! But that's an interesting design challenge. I would like to see how they work it out!

dont sell destroyers short mate. they can carry torpedoes and a single player, wont be in a single destroyer, he will have a wolfpack of destroyers, taking direct control of one of them. unlike light tanks, a destroyer wolfpack, will be an actual danger to consider.

You only control one ship.

Welcome to the World of Warships forum!   :Smile_honoring:

One of my many concerns is shallows, where some ships can navigate and others cannot.  That would create an interesting dynamic where shallow draft ships can navigate certain waterways, gaining an advantage that if the enemy does not allocate its own to protect, these ships could find themselves in either an advantageous position, or just useless to the rest of the fleet upon exiting.

What about deep waters, rough waters, calm waters and different channels currents? They could different currents on map which would give different speeds like roads, rocks and grasslands. They wouldn't have to have a specific direction but just give speed advantages.

KGB has state that currents and sea states will not influence the performance of a ship, he did say that rough seas migh be included in the game just like other weather effects.

Nope, please read the FAQ on that... Only 1 ship per player per battle.

I was wondering if their might be other submerged objects other than shallow water (reefs, sand banks). Also will entire areas be impassible because its too shallow, but you can still see over it to shoot? I think that it would be an interesting option, because large ships would be stuck, but small fast ships could cross and have some sort of advantage.

Indeed Sunken wreaks will cause issues for players and draft will also cause a concern, read the Q@A topics for more info.

It's going to be hard to tell the depth of water on a computer. The only way you could tell, I figure, is to have a sonar with depth.
