Im thinking it's that both world of warships and hockey are played on water... Or maybe because both teams tend to fight a lot?

Either way... there's no clear connection

None whatsoever but they want money so paying some sports figure (never heard of him before and he is ugly to boot), might get them new customers unclear on the concept of WWII naval battles.

At least the first animation (way back when) when whats-his-name was doing martial arts on the Missouri deck was nice. This one has a preposterous ice-rink on a US Navy carrier.Preposterous. Just as bad as a beer can on a battleship.

WG seems to be emphasizing the hard work, determination, and focus on the task/mission aspects of his personality and career in relation to what it takes to be successful in WOWS.  Plus,  the hockey hero angle.  The "in" thing for games (and seemingly everything else) now is the Bling.  For instance, in Rocket League my son values getting a skin out of a Golden Pumpkin as much as getting a vehicle.

What did a third rate actor with less acting skill than Chuck Norris related to warships?

True on the rating but at least the "in" was a movie semi-related to the USS Missouri.

I dislike the teenage girls too but at least their show had something to do with warships.

This one, as noted above has to do with money.

Because he is the captain of the Stanley Cup Champions Washington Capitals. He is one of THE franchise players in the NHL, and one of the best currently playing the game. When your'e a pro athlete, anything for a paycheck. Plus he is no uglier than any of the other Russin captains in the game!!

Last November, the U.S.S. Carl Vinson was transformed into a floating NCAA basketball court for Michigan State and North Carolina. Which is by far the coolest thing that's ever happened on the U.S.S. Carl Vinson, if you don't count that 1980s hair band-themed officers' happy hour, and transporting the lifeless body of Osama bin Laden to his burial at sea.

Perhaps inspired by this aquatic ballin', HC VMF St. Petersburg of the Major League Hockey (or VHL in Russia), the minor league for the Kontinental Hockey League, plans on holding a regular-season game on the deck of a Russian aircraft carrier next season.

Then of course this.

I am feeling some kind of connection.

In the basketball game they have the lowering of the Ensign ceromony at around 17 minutes in.

We Played flag football in the Well Deck of our ship. Frisbee too.

Chuck Norris is a Shakespearean actor compared to Segal and Chuck is pretty low on the acting chops tree.

I’m assuming because he’s Russian and might bring Russian players to the game... it’s kinda like the anime shows I’m guessing... just marketing/promotions

Ships drifting in water. Hockey players drifting on frozen water.

Ships launching hard objects to a goal. Hockey player launching hard object to a goal.

Some numbers here and there, some colors here and there.

About as much sense as I can make out of it.
