A poorly thought out vessel in my estimation.  Any A-ganger could have told them what happens to aluminum in a salt water environment... Then again, rushing a few units through the design and construction process to get a lock on the money has become rather common.  I'd rather see proper armor, a gun the is stronger than the 57mm, the inclusion of a VLS system, etc.  Lastly, fix the dang naming conventions...  City names belong on cruisers, not on something that rates closer to "armed fishing boat"...

that isn't fair...what about San Francisco?

What about it?  Submarines should have proper names like they used to as well.  Things like Shark, Drum, Dace, and Darter.  Not things like Newport News, San Francisco, and Scranton.

For being ugly it's ugly, but this is an Independence class LCS, the tag price should be under half of that.

yep, when you look at the small warships of other navies, then this thing....it baffles me. Especially with the retirement of our frigates. I dont have a problem with a 57mm cannon on the front. I just wish it had atleast 1 more, or do what the Freedom did....(2) 30mm Bushmaster Cannons amidships, atleast that adds a bit more punch. But yes, i agree this thing should have some sort of VLS. Even if it was only for a dozen.

Yeah. I think the LCS is underarmed too.

You do realize there are methods to prevent galvanic corrosion on aluminum alloys..........

It's a common convention being used around the world now days to try and create a sense of pride and ownership for these communities. In Canada, they have been using it extensively and even sending the crews of these ships to the city for festivals and celebrations. It's actually a fairly clever idea to try and keep people interested in and funding an often under appreciated military asset.

You have clearly never been to Newport News or Portsmouth Virginia.

What's the Zumwalts going to use to actually do littoral combat? Sure, it's got lower profile and all, but I remember that they are no teeth right now.

Its a missile boat. Sea Sparrow, Tomahawks and ASROC missiles (Anti Sub). It will also have 2 x 6.1" naval guns, the new AGS (Advanced Gun System).

Okie. The AGS is vital to justify the class imo. Glad to know that it's alive and well.

With only three ships in the class they're still what I'd call a white elephant.

That's what I thought too. I've been wondering about whether if LCS really is going to just fizzle away.

The LCS are here to stay, even the so called SSC are basically the same thing with a few improvements, but still no VLS, making them probably the least performing frigates in any major navy (they will name them frigates, FF).

I agree. It was a blunder on the Navy's part IMO. I do like the fact that we are going above 5in for the naval guns, however. I wish we would keep our current OHP class Frigates, I think they are just fine for now.

The Oliver Hazard Perry Class is no better the LCS now. All they have is a 76mm gun, torpedo tubes, CIWS and probably a remote controlled 25mm Mark 38 gun. The USN removed the Mark 13 missile launcher which fired RIM-66E Standard Missile-1 dual-purpose missiles and RGM-84 Harpoon missiles more than a decade ago.
