Why I Am Happy About Submarines

I was very pleasantly surprised to read that submarines are potentially coming to WOWS.

While I have greatly enjoyed WOWS in recent weeks I've felt that the game has stagnated. I've enjoyed the new ships and some new features but for the most part it felt as if it was just adding more of the same.

It's why I stopped playing WOT after having played it for many years.

I've spent a fair amount of money on the game with no regrets. This is after all my hobby as this is my downtime after work.

And I started getting less excited about spending my money since I felt I wasn't getting as much out of it. Worst of all it felt as if the game was coming to its end for me.

I don't know if submarines will work out or - as some claim - it will ruin the game. But I'm certainly optimistic and more than willing to give it a fair shot. Who knows? Maybe this is the stereotypical shot of fresh air in a stale relationship?

I would imagine many of you would rather WG fixes the current issues with the game first. That's certainly an ongoing process and I can't see why it can't happen concurrently.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

My attitude is: WG won't implement subs? Fine with me.

WG changed their collective minds and now will bring subs? Fine with me as well. I'll try 'em.

I'm a mellow fellow. :cap_tea:

While subs will be a welcome spicing up of the game, I was more interested in seeing U-Boats. I realize the game is not representative of history beyond a certain degree, U-Boats were the biggest story of naval warfare WW2. U-Boats would have torps alright, but also a deck gun - not much of a threat, but at least a gun as well.

I like to think I've kept an open mind on this (not saying you're not mind you).

If it works well I'd embrace the new subs. If not, at least WG gave it a shot.

Maybe that's later in the future if subs goes well?

If you like deck guns on subs, the USS Narwhal had 2 6" deck guns.

The picture of the Narwhal is further down the page.

while im expecting them to be slow and not have great surviability, so i dont think i can be disappointed in that regard they werent fast and didnt have good chances of surviving IRL, i suspect a good bit of that will be in the game, at the least im going to assume WG tweaks the speed of them so they can get further than the middle of the map by the time the match is over:Smile_teethhappy:

all the anti-sub peeps can wail all they want, i think subs, as long as WG balances them properly, should be fine, it'll be one of the biggest gambles WG makes with this game if subs comes to PvP, a gamble i hope pays off, because i love this game and would hate to see it die or get near death because of a failed balance of submarines

Right up to the time improved escort tactics and Coastal Command and CVE planes started sinking them. Germany lost the battle of the Atlantic because of Allied ASW. More u-boats would have just meant more sub losses.

Flip side, Allied subs were the strategic victors in the Pacific. Japan had pathetic ASW.

U-boats were not an offensive weapon, they were designed to interrupt allied shipping.  When faced with warships, they crumbled.  Keep in mind that they have very little armor, poor speed, and no torp launchers - the boat IS the torp launcher and has to be aimed at the target.  I do not see them having a place in regular WOWS play, but will have fun fooling with them in the Halloween Scenario.  It will be interesting to see player's reactions from the Halloween event.

I also doubt they will be able to shoot each other, considering how the torps are aimed, assuming they have hydro themselves.

And here is the problem, balance.  That is due to the fact subs were not part of such battles, they have be shoehorned into fitting.  It won't matter how its done, both sides will complain about balance, or this or that (yes, even pro-sub players will complain about it).

I doubt WG is going to be able to render, program and deploy submarines and ASW in any balance or logical fashion.....  It's be another "gimmick" they use to measure what we already know they are just about compelled to do:  advance the WoWs timelines into the 1960's-70's......

That might not be a bad idea either.....they are testing game play gimmicks and weapons gimmicks right now.......to see how profitable that era creep will be.

Can they, in a value added way, deploy submarines:  no.  But, they will deploy them and we'll see the meta meter swing all over the place and we'll see a population loss for a few weeks and some serious gameplay confusion for a few more!

One can only hope, eh?!

First of all, I used the word "crumbled" to be melodramatic.

Secondly, there were 765 U-Boats lost in WWII by all costs.

Finally, check this list out (262 Allied warships lost/damaged, 97 Auxiliary):

Don't want to dissapoint you but there was a Q&A at Friday on reddit and Sub_Octavian said, that they will only join the game for the Halloween event.

The necessary changes need too many resources.

I think they will be a very all or nothing class. Either they will be very OP and hated by all or very underpowered and a waste of a team slot.

They will also add more crap to deal with for DDs and CLs.

I imagine if wargame attempts to balance them, they may buff there speed and armor like navyfield 1 did back in the day.

and hedgehogs, lovely hedgehogs
