Note the planes this WWII pilot is credited with downing.

Screen-Shot-2016-06-28-at-12.37.49-PM-46

In the South Pacific, the American P-51 pilot shot down an American transport that had gotten lost and had also lost its radio and was headed for a landing at a Japanese-controlled airfield, where the Americans would have had a very hard time indeed after being captured. After trying several times to get the transport to alter course, he carefully shot out both engines of the C-47, causing it to ditch in the ocean near another American plane that had previously ditched. He then escorted a flying boat to the area the next day, and all the Americans were rescued. Included among downed crew and passengers was a nurse the P-51 pilot had gone on a date with the night before. She became his wife.

There were very few pilots even among the aces that could shoot that well. Interesting that he got the trifecta for Axis warplanes and that kill list would be unusual even without the US marking. I bet his buddies put the flag on the plane.

He walks out the next day, it's just suddenly there on his plane, then he turns to his snickering friends and is all like "Har har, very funny."

Its interesting what War forces people to do sometimes. Risky stuff like this is a perfect example of it.

When you shoot down a plane carrying your girlfriend and she marries you as a result
