I'm pickup the Minsk and Sims and will use them mostly in Dynamo. I would greatly appreciate suggestions.

If you have an aa build usn captain. (Or have the ability to get one) I would recommend using it on the sims if you are trying to 5 Star the operation really quickly.  The defensive aa and the ability to get the long range aa to have a max range of 7.6km helps out a lot when you have incoming waves of planes.

I would recommend going with the Sims. 

Consummables:  Premium smoke, and premium DFAA

Ship upgrades:  MAM-1, Prop-1, AA Guns-2, Prop-2

Captain skills:  PM, LS, BFT, AFT, EM, AR, EM, AR, SI, JoaT

The Sims in dynamo is like cheating It shoots down all the planes and kills all the boats on auto pilot.:cap_rambo:

Used Blys and wondered why I bothered...

Couldn't hit a bloody thing with it at ranges that didn’t seem to be an issue with Gallant last year. Basically had to run up on the E-botes to get reliable hits... (Lead more? The reticle doesn’t go out far enough...)

Guess I need to try Sims... (wish I could use Atlanta or a Dido...)

My Mahan Capt is SA, LS, BFT, AFT, MAA. Next skill I'm getting will be superintendent followed probably by whatever the improved smoke is. It works great.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with premium smoke.  There is plenty of smoke with 6 DDs.

I didn't have much of a problem killing the Schnellboots with the Blys.  Not as much luck so far with the USN DD's.  Pitiful AA when the Sky Cancer swarm starts.  But the guns are decent enough.

Well Monaghan is not a Sims, but don't knock it.  You do have to trust your team to take care of the torp boats.

if your going to play the role of a mobile AA platform, then play it and position yourself in the right places, and if you do that you can get away with 5km or ~6km outer AA range, and you will still have a reasonably tight shot grouping for dealing with the odd boat.

 

on the other hand many are using the extremes of AA range so they can get further away from the ships to be escorted and thus closer to the torp boats to make up for the extra dispersion they now have because they are not really interested in providing AA, they are just interested in the bit of extra XP they get from additional plane kills.

 

i.e. being in the right place with something that has mediocre AA can trump something with very good AA that is well out of position for the role of AA, and some of the ships that are mediocre to poor in AA are actually MUCH better at dealing with the torp boats than a fully AA spec Sims from middle distances.

 

hence for general purpose use a Sims with a 6km outer AA range via the commander skill but still takes the Aiming Systems Modification 1in slot 3 is probably the best compromise without being too one-sided in use and able to balance aircraft and boat kills better.

I've been grinding ships for discounts so haven't had a chance to do the op yet (thanx for reminder before it is too late btw OP).

On the PT I just used the Mahan & speced for nothing but gun advantages for hitting the boats & other than BFT/AFT (more for the guns than the AA)/& AA flag did nothing to buff the AA. I just went forward as soon as I was full of passengers & met the planes before they got close enough to the convoy to be an issue (plus team was smoking up convoy so that helped) & after each wave of planes & boats I boosted a line of smoke back to the convoy from up front then turned back to the front to charge the incoming planes & boats again...rinse & repeat through whole op. 5 starred it 1st time on both PTs & expect to 5 star it 1st time on regular also w/same procedure.

1st time on PT the team was so good together smoking up convoy (w/out anybody even saying anything in regards to it in chat...just naturally did what needed to be done) we didn't lose any other boats in the whole convoy or on the team other than Parks...poor Parks.

2nd time lost 1 team member & a couple convoy ships but still easily 5 starred it.

Edit: Just checked & we have 2 weeks...cool...plenty of time...although I just finished all of the ships I needed to for discounts last night so might jump into it tonight after getting the 200% bonuses on all the new ships I have to start grinding done (7 new ships but 1 of them is T10 so only need to get 1st wins on the 6...a lot of ships I've been waiting on discounts for a long time finally moving again). Guess I'll have to wait & see if I can get the 6 ships 1st wins in 6 games or if it's gonna take 20 & I'm too burnt out by then LOL.

I have a captain build specifically for ops for USN, so that works well.

BFT/AFT/Manual AA make this pretty fun on a Sims. lol.

KILLING them no; HITTING them yes.

Unless I got in their faces; (5k, and often less,) I had a hard time getting the shots to group for fast/reliable kills. It seemed the lead needed to be 20-25 (which doesn’t exist on the reticle I use,) to hit the boats at 7k.

After the second game I started charging the E-botes and did better killing them; (shots at 3k or less, often into their backs, which is great, because they can’t torp me...)

Like last year; I’ve had more trouble with bombers than the E-botes... I want to use Sims (or whatever,) just to have something that actually shoots down planes... (compared to the RAF reinforcements; which are just as worthless as they were last year.)

On the anecdotal side;

Me; ‘Dang so many Russian destroyers in Dynamo...’ (one game had a Gnevny, 2-3 Minsks, and a Leningrad...)

Response; (presumably from one on the Russians) ‘Don’t worry Comrade Tommy; We’ll save the day.’

I finally got Manual AA on my Sims before my last battle...went from averaging about 30-35 airplanes a match to 68...and I didn't even finish the battle cause at the end I caught a torpedo I didn't expect.

Feels like cheating with Sims before, now it's just ridiculous.

Sims full AA build.  50-70 planes per Op average. It makes everything easier for everyone else.  It’s also starting to become common knowledge. I had a match with five full AA Sims including myself.  It was like taking a slow walk in a nice park.

I just threw my only high point Commander in my Sims and went for it. No problems.

I've run Dynamo twice with a random team and we five starred it twice.

My commander is PM, LS, BFT, DE, SE & CE. Not an AA build - this is my best attempt at a universal USN DD commander. But it worked fine.

All I did in my ship was swap out the Smoke Screen for DFAA.

So basically: Dynamo is a ton of fun, but it doesn't take any special prep. Don't hesitate -- dive in and go for it.

Call straight up revenge for last year.

Most found it easy to deal with the loliest of lolibotes, but lost because the RAF was useless and they got mobbed by bombers...

I used this build this morning and shot down 69 planes with my Sims the next closest was 11

yup I have the captain mainly for Atlanta/Flint/Cleveland in other operations since I'm a certified free xp farmer.

I guess it'll work well for the Sims on this one, too ;-)

Its even worse than it seems with a bunch of Sims. If they take out the big fighter spawn fast then most of the green fighters surrvive. When that happens they start attacking the bombers at the east map border and kill everything.

 I had a match today where I had 25ish plane kills, nobody else have over 20. 6 full green fighter squads survived the dogfighting and that was that for planes. The green fighters wrecked everything.

Maybe that's their Commander from a different type. CA? BB? CL?

But I don't see PT?

Or IFHE for CLs.

I'm going to say AA spec BB commander.

(Maximum WoWs geekery in effect here. I'm speculating on some list of little two letter codes...)

Yep.  You just kinda saunter your way to the finish line with everyone fighting over who kills the torpedo boats first.  Everything is dead and gone long before you reach it.
