A really long thread ran on this ship a few months ago can prolly still find it before it's archived.

If it was longer than a month ago then it's gone.. Might as well start a new one anyways seeing as how the old one won't be checked anymore

The "Ski Jump" as it is known is meant to assist any of the British STOVL or VTOL jets take off

IMO it will wind up being a mistake. They were originally designed with an angled flight deck and American-designed magnetic catapults... but the hiccups experienced with the prototypes (at least in part) led the Brits to balk.

Why would it be a mistake? The "ski jump" has already been on many British Carriers

I.E.: Invincible Class including the HMS Invincible, HMS Illustrious and HMS Ark Royal

Largely because the angled flight deck/catapult system is the most effective for maximum number of sorties. It also means, for better or worse, the QEs are now F-35 platforms until the next SVTOL design comes along in 20 years.

And that is exactly what it is being planned for. The British prefer STOVL and VTOL aircraft over CTOL or CATOBAR aircraft

The F35 is a widely derided weapons system. I wouldn't want my brand new super carrier married to it.

That is one mighty fine ship, but I still think that the USS Gerald R. Ford is one of the most beautiful ships ever.

Super_Dreadnaught prolly heard me before, but I don't like how they look. Mainly the ski-jump. Granted the move to it was because of the stupidity that is the F-35 program but meh, I don't like it. The double island feels odd to me as well.

Anyone else expecting a giant iceberg carrier? :hiding:

Yes, lol.

But the Carrier looks really cool with the curved ramp for jets, other aircraft, etc.

they are beautiful ships, and its about time Britain gets a new fleet carrier. Although it is a shame they are going with the F-35B and not the F-35C. I think the B is going to be an overall failure while the A and C models will operate just fine. I know the B models for the Marines here in the U.S. will not be able to carry their intended ordnance payload until 2022, because of obstructions in the ordnance bay.

F35 will excel in it's designed role.

Much, much worse things were said about the M2/M3 Bradley in the early 80's, and it was and still is a great IFV/CFV.

Don't believe all the negative press, the majority of it is just political/contractor posturing and uneduated talking heads who confuse a LPH with a CVN or an assault rifle with a bolt action.
