Gunboat Lollibotes

Alright, so I've been leveling the Akizuki, the Farragut, and the Podvoisky. I'm wondering which T10 lollibote I should go for if I want to pursue an aggressive, gunboat-y role (as I'm a bit strapped for credits and time). I don't like using torpedoes and only rely on them when the enemy is <5km away, so I feel that I won't perform as well in hybrid DDs than I would in a pure gunboat. I like smoking up and setting ships on fire, as well as murdering enemy DDs in caps. I hear that the British DDs are good cap-contesters, but I want to know which T10 DD would suit me best. Thanks in advance!

Gunboat DDs aren't good cap contesters in general, torpedobote DDs tend to be smaller and more concealable.

That said, there is an argument to be made for Z-52. It's a decent gunboat and although it doesn't have the best stealth, that hydro is worth its weight in gold. It's probably the best combination of aggressive / cap contesting / gunbote you're going to find.

The Soviet DD line leading to Khabarovsk is as gunboat as it gets. However this line isn't suited that much to contesting caps, but rather harrassing anything in sight and avoiding damage by using range and speed.

All that said, at the moment Grozovoi seems to be in a good spot for what you are interested in. He has reasonable stealth, dependable main battery, smoke and heal as well.

Is not a bad option but I prefer the duration of hydro and the fact it also picks up torpedoes, over short range radar.

I'm fine with not being able to cap-contest, I just like aggression in general. But again, I suck at torping. I tried playing the Gaede but it just didn't work out for me. It's just not fast, concealed, or maneuverable enough to play aggressively. That said, I'm not suicidal, but I like being on the front lines. Maybe Groz? But I don't really see what it has to offer over Gearing or YY other than the heal.

Then Soviet DDs by what you just described. A very successful way of playing Soviet DDs is escorting a stealthier DD to a cap, then providing covering fire versus opposing cappers.

In addition, in the higher tiers you can do what many call evasion tanking, ie. using your speed and range to pin down opponents from advancing and having them waste time trying to shoot  at range a very fast target like you.

With the radar meta, I find that the YY with radar is priceless for clearing a cap. you warn you team of your intent to enter cap and radiate. You sit quietly and let the cruisers do the cruiser thing. Doesn't matter who the other DD is. Smoke has no value, hydro is out of range...

Only experience with Z-52 is on PTS, so I can say definitively, but I am liking the YY more now than ever.

Oddly, my WR is better in the Gearing. Go figure.

If you want a T10 gunboat, there are only really two dedicated ships- Harugumo and Khaba. Khaba doesn't fire as fast but has higher velocity and the ability to open water gunboat, while Harugumo will suffer in the same regard. Both ships will be absolutely annihilated if they sit in smoke because they are so big they will eat torps. Khaba might be able to get out easier thanks to acceleration, but usually khaba players prefer heal instead of smoke.

Kitikaze can be played more aggressively than Harugumo becaues of better concealment and better manuverability but Daring will most likely be the best ship in the game to sneak around caps.

This. It's what makes Z-52 one of my favorite ships.

Sounds like the Khabarovsk is exactly what you're looking for.

In fact my clanmate has featured 3 Khaba replays on his youtube channel, 2 of which are mine and the other from one of our friends.

All 3 are down to the wire matches as well, which is always exciting. lol

Burning Ships to the Waterline, title speaks for itself. lol, Captain Lyn_Wilke.

Cap Control FTW, speaks for itself again. Captain 33nfidel.

https://youtu.be/QiUwR_SkVhQ

Perseverance, a match against all odds. Captain Lyn_Wilke.

https://youtu.be/414UGb0fitU

Can't figure out how to embed a video atm, so links'll have to do for now I guess. :\

If nothing else, Perseverance is a good watch. ;)

*shameless self-clan-youtube-promotion aside, the Khaba is a great gunboat, and no other T10 DD can do the same job nearly as well. That job being open water harassment. lol

Cheers, Lyn_Wilke

What's a T10 ship that plays a lot like Farragut? I'm considering Russian DDs, but I just want to know.

once you get to the high tiers, virtually every DD can be a gunbote in some form or another, some better than others

As someone else said, you can make any of the high tier DDs into a gunboat.  Some are better at kiting, some are better at attacking, some are better firing from smoke, some are better at being in the open water blazing away.  Depends on your preference.  Z52 is pretty fun.  Tho i find the Z46 to be better in some ways.  German AP is solid.   RU DDs are just fun and non stop action from start to end.  The new IJN DDs are fun, lol penning every DD, cruiser, and BB you will face.  IJN stealth DDs are good for kiting.  US DDs are good all around. RU stealth DDs are similar.   Pan asian play about the same way too, tho without DFAA.

RU DDs are up your alley.  Khabarovsk in particular over Grozovoi in terms of pure gunboating and farming tears.  She's so fast that a number of people just give up trying to shoot at her.  She also has 50mm sections of armor plate on her sides that defeat even 203mm HE shells.  And that's on top of her fantastic guns.

Hold on, I kinda want a Gearing because I'm already leveling a captain there and I have decent stats in the Farragut. I feel that if I do use it, though, the fact that I don't like using torps will hinder me from reaching my full potential in a DD. Plus, you can mount 2 flags on USN DDs if you complete part of the USN Cruisers collection, and if I can one day manage to get both of the ranked flags that decrease the post-battle service costs, I can stack those with the permacamo and be able to save a lot of credits. Any advice regarding this before I dedicate myself to RU gunboats? Again, thank you, community.

This is your god now:

The outright obscene DPS literally shreds everything that gets in it's path.....I'm learning with the Aki that these ships are obscene and amazing...and the grind is a breeze.

This is the purest definition of "gunboat lollibote".

If you like to mix smoke with setting things on fire, stick with the Akizuki line.  I chose Kiev--Tashkent--Khaba because I don't like hiding - I want to contribute by using speed and firepower to keep the enemy off-balance and trying to shoot in two or three directions at once.  My happy place is on some open flank, lit up and targeted by half the enemy team because I keep setting them on fire, while my team racks up unanswered damage because the enemy team can't hit a dodging VMF gunboat at 12 km.  It has worked out pretty well so far.

Get a Fletcher. It does it all... Lacks an ezmode gimmick(Hydro, Radar, Russian Number Generator) but that's part of the charm.

I just got the Aki the other day, and man is that thing fun.  Outside my first game which was meh, its been nothing but fun and almost easy mode.(even in a stock ship)  Especially if you have someone nearby to spot for you like another DD.  I feel bad for any lower tier DDs.  They just get eaten alive.  The more i play it, the more i think they overtuned this ship.  I was planning on keeping this when i finished the grind, and this just reinforces that point.  Sadly i wont have a 14 point captain for her when i move on.

well, i wouldn't say the Tier 7 was bad, but for a gun boat line, yes the previous ships were not impressive.  the Hat was just awful.  tier 5 was not impressive either.

Have the Aki and have reasonably good stats in it... I'll stick with it then? Already have a 15-pointer for her, so why not... Thing is, I hate getting torped in my own smoke, so I'll adjust my playstyle. Can't move up to Kitakaze, though, don't have enough credits. I also don't have enough doubloons for the commander retraining.
