The Basic Firing Training Skill for Captain's states, "Advanced Firing Training

+20% to firing range of main battery guns with a caliber up to 139mm and all secondary battery guns.

+20% to AA defense firing range."

Why then is this recommended so highly for ships with 152, 203 , 304, and even 406 MM guns since in my reading it does nothing for them.    With the recommendation that I read recommending it there has to be something that I'm missing and really need to understand.    Thanks for any help on this.

Why quote from Advanced Firing Training if your question is about Basic Firing training?

But, the answer to your question is contained in the phrases "and all secondary battery guns" and "AA defense"

BIG WORDS, ALL CAPS

They are what is recommended. You don't have to take those skills if you don't want to. I have it on all of my BBs because it is just part of my "default skill set". Go based on other people's suggestions or make it your own.

As it says, AFT increases secondary battery and anti-aircraft damage. Some BBs just about have to have it, lest they be nearly defenseless against planes. German BBs need it if you are going to take full advantage of their secondary power. Some cruisers with pretty amazing AA specs to begin with essentially generate no-fly zones when fully spec'd for AA (including AFT). When you get to tier X in the USN line, try fully outfitting a Worcester for AA. If you do then you can laugh your head off when a tier X CV tries to send planes anywhere near a ship you are escorting.

At the end, the words "regardless of calibre" should be taken as read.

If I had an 18 inch gunned battleship with 12 inch secondaries, the 12 inch guns would benefit from BFT and AFT.

Basic Firing Training (BFT) and Advanced Firing Training (AFT) are two different skills.

BFT lowers the reload time for main guns that are 139mm and lower by -10%. So a 127mm gun that fires every 5 seconds has that drop to 4.5 seconds with the BFT skill.

BFT on ships with secondary guns, the secondary guns of all sizes have their reload lowered by -10%. So if a ship has 100mm secondary guns that fire every 5 seconds and 152mm secondary guns that fire every 10 seconds, then if the ship's captain has the BFT skill the ship has the 100mm secondary guns reload drop to 4.5 seconds and the 152mm secondary guns would drop to 9s reload.

The BFT skill has the AA guns have their Damage Per Second (DPS) increased by 20%. So a set of AA guns that does 100 DPS, will have that boosted to 120 DPS with the BFT skill.

The BFT skill does all of the above if a ship has those types of guns. So the Haida DD that has 120mm main guns, secondary guns and AA guns would have all of those buffed by the BFT skill.

For Advanced Firing Training, the range on all main guns 139mm or smaller, all secondary guns and all AA guns is increased by 20%. So the Haida DD has 128mm main guns with a 12.3km range, a secondary gun with 4km range and AA guns of ranges 2km, 2.5km and 5km. So with AFT the Haida DD gets main guns of 14.8km, secondary gun range of 4.8km and AA gun ranges of 2.4km, 3km and 6km.

Once again shipmates thanks for confirming that I was reading this skill correctly.   I had picked up on the "all secondary guns" but had thought I had possibly missed, or misunderstood, something regarding the bigger main guns performance.    I do, at times vary from the "suggested/recommended" skills sets, even considering what other captains use and recommend but in the end it is each individual Captain's decision.    THANKS, SHIPMATES! A
