You may or may not know me as a lovable beaver which has more recently popped up around the forum, and now I'd like to make a BIG proposition to you all. It has come to my understanding that there are quite a few retired or active military personnel on the forums (or just floating around) and I'd like to inform you about a project which has been around for the past 15 years under the Library of Congress, named the "Veterans History Project". The Veterans History Project collects the stories of veterans and preserves it either online or keeps it at the Library of Congress for future generations to see. They collect these stories through your collections of official documents, journals, photos, anything really! If you want, you could also be interviewed by a local volunteer group so that even when you pass on, your family and the nation will have your life's story as a reminder of the service you gave to your country. No matter how small you may think your contribution might have been, every little bit helps preserve the big picture of American history, and your role in it. Also, because they are under the governments umbrella, you don't have to worry about breaching any confidentiality agreements such as those signed by Korean and Vietnam war veterans, and even if you are currently serving you can comtribute. We've had veterans who have never talked about their service to their families, and only when we interviewed them did they open up about their experiences, this has allowed them to finally come to terms, even if only a little bit, with the horrors they've witnessed in war. I'm worried that this may sound a bit ranty/boring, so I'll leave you with one more thing: I cannot stress the importance of donating your stories to this, I come from a naval family that's served in both WWI and WWII, sadly they never passed down their stories and they've been lost to time.. I never want that to happen again, especially since as time goes on, the importance of remembering our past gets even more important as to prevent us from repeating past mistakes, and this will help us achieve that goal. Sidenote: Even if you aren't a veteran but you have old family collections from a family member which served, you can get them preserved in the library of congress too. But less and less veterans are coming forward to be interviewed, so I want to preserve stories not only through interviewing, but through spreading the word now
