A few updates back when they made your crew warn you about it (It was added in with the loud horn warning that blares as well).

Heavy Gail was a girl who lived down the street from me in 7th grade.  She was pretty chunky for a 12 yr old.  Nice girl, though.

Heavy gales can produce a lot of rain, or so I'm told.

I must have just never even bothered noticing it.  So it was a new one on me.

Hey Gail wase sensitive.. so yea.. if she got picked on, much precipitation...

Now, a heavy Gale on the other hand... that could be interesting...  So want heavy weather in this game... your guns should have to compete with lightning and thunder!

NOAA defines a gale as a storm with winds  between 34-47 knots. The old Beaufort scale had 4 different classes of gale force winds. Today only 2 come under the label of gale. 47 knot winds and waves 23 to 32 foot high would cause a lots of problems for DD's & smaller warships. It wouldn't be fun on a cruisers, BB or CV either.

What we as Players  of WoWs encounter is Rain, No waves, Darker Skies. Navigation is not affected,No Pitch or roll, Just a slight visual impairment.

Storms in WoWs is no where near an actual Gale. A summer rain with gentle breezes more like it.

Rough weather with a chance to cause flooding in destroyers.  >:D

I read that DD's had the flaps over the top of their funnels so they could fully submerge and come out of the wave without the water pouring down the smoke stack - catastrophic damage not withstanding.
