The Gearing is a "Jack of All Trades" ship. The Gearing is not the very best stealth torpedo boat, nor is it the very best gunboat. However, it isn't always best to specialize. In biology as well as business, the specialist can excel and flourish, until conditions change. The species that becomes too overspecialized will almost always become extinct, while the "lowly" generalist usually muddles through. This is why the Gearing excels. Need a spotter-capper? Call the Gearing. Need enemy ships torpedoed? Call the Gearing. Need a gunboat to harass and support? Again, call the Gearing. Meta change? No problem for the Gearing -- it adapts.

Get a Z-52 and do everything meaningful that a Gearing can do, except better.

Groz is a good candidate too.

Haven't played my Gearing in forever, it’s just not competitive anymore.

For DDs, I rotate through Gearing, Fletcher, Yugumo (Until I get Shimakaze), Z-52, V-170, and Akatsuki.  As far as the tier IXs and tier Xs go, I think I usually do best in Gearing, and next on the list is Z-52.  I kept Fletcher, because so many people swear by it.  But I don't seem to do as well with it as I do with Gearing.  Not sure why.

Wow. Great game my man!

I've seen Snarg in action in that Gearing of his. This is not an anomaly!

I'm glad you like it, I think it's poor and I'm still perplexed they buffed the slightly better performing Shimakaze ahead of it.

The 11 km guns are a big turnoff.

:Smile_child:

Better than the even longer range guns the Fletcher and Benson have. Would be nice to have the 9.4k range of the Harekaze.

Compares to all other nation destroyers, Gearing has better guns than Z52, better armor than Yueyang, better control ability than shimakaze.  Gearing is truly a wonderful destroyer. At first I was not a fan of Gearing because it melt fast under BBAP. After I played all other nations destroyers I found its charm.

THE 21mm.

with its fast reload gun, broadside to enemy destroyer, most of the hit of HE will shred, AP of yueyang and gearing itself will overpen. Bow on Z52 due to its lack of dmg and smoke torp khaba and grozovoi, simple.
16.5 km torpedo is one of the best torpedo in game, decent 66knots can easily hit anything, not like PA DD cannot hit destroyer, not like IJN DD too easy to dejavu, not like Russian DD and German DD's lack of range.

best destroyer in game?  maybe not
easiest DD to play?  definitely not
Hotel?  triv......

I think a loot of getting good in a ship is to play it a lot. Though the grind was somewhat slow without a Premium account, I went through the American DD line about as fast as I could. In doing this I probably didn't give the individual ships the time they deserved. Of course, with a tier X ship there is nowhere left to go, so I'm playing the Gearing a lot more. The more I play, the more I learn about its strengths and weaknesses.

In the above match, I actually took down a Seattle in a gunfight. Never be afraid to use your Gearing's guns.
