Hmm I remember someone posting an article about this a year or 2 ago and it was pretty intriguing. I need to finish with my time machine so I can go back and see if I can solve this mystery or perhaps I succeed but end up causing it due to a temporal paradox . . .

Time machine arrives on scene at point of incident, explodes, sinking ship and nearby submarine.  Yeah, I can see it.
