Part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement in history. Much respect to Taffy 3 and the charge of the light brigade.

 

Only battle in which US carriers were ever fired upon by an enemy heavy surface combatant.

As Commander Ernest E Evans said as he took command of USS Johnston "This is going to be a fighting ship, I intend to go into harm's way, and anyone who doesn't want to go along had better get off now, he also added I will never retreat from an enemy force". And he didn't, he attacked a superior enemy force without orders to do so and changed the outcome of the Battle off Samar. That man was fearless,  along with the rest of the men of Taffy 3 who gave all that they had and then some. What bravery.
