In a recent battle with my Lexington I got 6 citadel hits on battleships with bombs. I haven't played a CV in a while but I can't recall that I ever did more than start fires on BBs before with the dive bombers. Does the Lexington now have AP bombs?

Well, I just looked at the setup and found that it indeed does have AP bombers. This is new to me but they sure work well.

YEah, its had them for a few months, someone with more ambition or memory should be able to provide the patch that they got them in. Essex and Midway have them as well.

Lexington (and Essex and Midway) got the option of AP dive bombers in patch 0.6.14 (29 November 2017), the same patch which removed USN CV's alternate squad setups.

The stock DBs carry HE bombs, while you get a choice of AP or HE for upgraded DBs.  Note that you have to research them separately.

Advantages of AP:

  • Smaller and (particularly) narrower drop pattern.  Higher hit probability.
  • Citadel hits!  (albeit mainly limited to German BBs and top-tier CAs)

Advantages of HE:

  • Fires, enabling DoT-stacking tactics.
  • Standard-pen hits against every target, without worry about overpens.
  • Module damage within blast radius.  Strip off AA so your TBs don't do a VT-8, or jam steering on a narrow miss.
