Looking all over for an answer but since I don't know what they are called I don't know what to search for. What are those little torpedo/submarine things with the wings on them that are strapped to the battleships?? See picture.

Paravanes. Objects shaped to be able to be towed through the water at a certain distance / angle to the ship to entangle and disarm mines.

Among the classified material destroyed after WW2 was one of the most hideous unmanned weapons of the seas.

It was given a set of letters and numbers, but it was referred to by the OSI as the acoustic submarine.  It was basically a stand-alone torpedo launcher that hovered 30 feet below the ocean surface.

It would be set adrift in the ocean currents and armed after a couple months.  They also self-terminated (not explosively) after 1.5 years.

After armed, it would detect sounds in a certain frequency range and launch a homing torpedo in the source direction after a strong enough amplitude peaked and started fading.

These were never deployed.  Research was collected and completely obliterated.  Scientists and technicians were sworn to secrecy.  Cover stories were fabricated.

Soviets developed something similar in the 1960s.
