On June 19, 1915, BB-39 USS Arizona, second of the Pennsylvania-class battleships, was launched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

While Arizona is best known for the events of Pearl Harbor, there is much more to her than that:

  • Her race-boat team won the Battenberg Cup in July 1918, beating the crew from USS Nevada by about 3 lengths over a 3-mile course.
  • Her crew won the Cup again in April 1919.
  • In March 1931, she hosted President Hoover during a brief vacation in the Caribbean.
  • She participated in multiple fleet problems that had her sail everywhere from Peru to the West Indies.
  • In March 1924, her crew managed to smuggle aboard a hooker named Madeline Blair who exchanged favors of a...certain nature for food, quarters, etc. as well as a trip to Hollywood. When she was discovered, 23 men were imprisoned, the longest for ten years. Madeline Blair eventually became a highly respected lady and champion of women's rights.
  • She received a modernization from 1929 to 1931:
    • brand new superstructure
    • Torpedo bulges and additional horizontal armor for protection against air attacks
    • New boilers and turbines
    • the torpedo tubes were removed
    • new tripod masts replaced the cage masts
  • On March 10, 1933, USS Arizona's crew helped out the residents of San Pedro during the Long Beach earthquake, setting up first aid stations, providing communications, patrolling the area, and providing food and shelter for the displaced residents

Here's a happy birthday to you, my doughnut-loving battleship!

I remember a WWI vet they used to roll out during the Pearl anniversary; he was there during the attack and went down multiple times between passing out to rescue people.  Lived into his 90s.

Appropriately for the occasion (though he doesn't mention it), today Jingles has a fascinating game centered on the exploits of USS Arizona.

Stick around for the ending.
