IJN destroyer Matsu under fire - by Y. Mizuno

The IJN Matsu class destroyers were built late in WW II, directly preceded by the Yūgumo-class, and were intended to be more cost-effective in response to the changing character of naval warfare at that time. Smaller and lighter than previous Japanese destroyers, she was equipped with different armament including enhanced AA, anti-submarine weapons and radar. Surface warfare was believed to be less likely at this stage of the war, and torpedo armament was reduced.

As in other navies during the war, the IJN substantially simplified the design to speed up construction, and used Otori class torpedo boat equipment because high speed was unnecessary for convoy escort operations; that said, mass production was not achieved.

The Matsu class design was subsequently further simplified, resulting in the Tachibana-class destroyer (橘型駆逐艦 Tachibana-gata kuchikukan) or Modified Type-D Destroyer (改丁型駆逐艦 Kai Tei-gata kuchikukan). The Tachibana-class destroyers adopted the first modular design in a Japanese destroyer. Matsu-class destroyers whose construction was started late in the programme were completed as Tachibana class (not the earlier 1912 destroyer currently in-game obviously).

The IJN converted twelve destroyers to Kaiten (manned kamikaze torpedoes) mother ships to prepare for the final Japanese mainland defense.

Matsu-class destroyer Take with Kaiten

It would be interesting to see this ship appear as a tier IX premium opposite the Yūgumo. What would make this premium DD unique? How about in addition to the normal array of torps: one remote-controlled Kaiten launched from the stern?

I don't think manned subs would be appropriate, based on that WG doest want kamikaze type planes ingame.

Not a sub per se, a torpedo. It was just an afterthought in any case.

If you stretch that analogy just a bit further, a kamikazi is really just a guided missile; what WoW doesn't want in the game are any weapons that were guided by suicide pilots, and a kaiten would certainly fit into that catagory.

The "Kaiten" would simply be replaced with regular torpedoes, but perhaps with some unique aspect (single-fire maybe?). It strays into funky moral grounds, and its much easier for WG to not introduce a new weapon. It would be a gimmick replacing something historical, so we'd be almost guaranteed to get it.

Yes yes agreed. I confess I threw that in as clickbait. Mea culpa. :cap_wander_2:
