Is the Lo Yang still considered a viable Tier 8 Prem DD?  Get a Harekaze? Or wait for the Kidd?  Opinions?

It really depends on what type of playstyle you want for your destroyers.

Loyang and Kidd are very good for contesting caps and slaughtering enemy destroyers, although Kidd is more of a cap bully and support ship (thanks to weaker torpedoes, terrific AA, and a heal,) and Loyang more of a hybrid (better torpedoes but also low hitpoints and hydro).

Harekaze can be suited for either an Akizuki-style destroyer hunter or a Kagero-style torpedo boat, it depends on which hull you choose and what consumables you pick.

Asashio is really only good for spotting enemy destroyers (not engaging them) and terrifying battleships at the expense of having other cruisers and destroyers laugh at you.

Lo yang and Kidd are far superior to asashio and harakaze. Kidd has great aa and the ability to beat down any other t8 and most t9 dds easily, but it will still cost you most of your hp. Lo yang can completely control a cap while taking minimal damage, but she has very little hp, so if you get spotted, it won't go far. Both are great although I would recommend Kidd first since it's easier to play, although longer yang is the better ship for uptiering and in general if you can get used to her playstyle.

I have or had a lot of Tier 8 DDs.  Kidd appears to be moving to be my favorite as the number of Radar ships grow. The ability to heal after running away from a barrage of radar induced fire is essential.

I disagree with how easy Kidd is to play. With only half the torps you have to be very good.

Truth is that I am now playing my tier 10 DDs, Anshan or Gremy (Tier 6 and 5)   Tier 8 ends up in the same games as tier 10. Way too much Radar to take a knife to a gunfight.

I personally love be my Harekaze it is the ship that showed me that DDs can be fun since originally I only got it due to the anime.

Loyang's hydro is OP, but it lacks DPM and HP, which means a Harekaze can win a slug match with Loyang

Asashio is superb, since you can launch torps from complete stealth and catch many BBs off guard.

Kidd is definitely the strongest

I have both the KIDD & LOYANG.  Both are strong DDs but I'd lean more towards the KIDD.  The heal ability is nice to have, especially with all the radar out there now...

I would say Kidd is probably the best pick. You only have 1 torps launcher but you gain in return the ability to heal and you also annoy CV.

I have Kidd and Lo Yang, both strong. I prefer Lo Yang due to sonar.

Kidd, Loyang, and Harekaze are all good ships but my money is on the Harekaze. Its Kagero stealth (5.4km detection with CE and mod)+ IFHE Akizuki guns makes it great since you can deal with any (mostly any) kind of surprises you got to face....AA and speed is the downside for it but otherwise Harekaze is better than Loyang and Kidd (now this is purely my opinion)

Asashio is a good DD, however it's a very specialised ship. It is a demanding little boat requiring an experienced DD captain with torpedo boat experience, and very high situational awareness to get the best out of it. Looking at the OP's stats, it is most certainly not a T8 DD he should buy.

If we are talking raw damage, my Asashio is clearly the strongest DD.  If we are talking solo win rate, my Asashio is the strongest DD for me.  Competitive; Kidd.  DD hunter; hands down Lo Yang.  Overall fun, depends on my mood and what drops with me in the queue.  All of them have a flavor of fun.  And that's all I ask for in a premium, fun factor.

Harikaze is by far the most versatile.

Both Kidd and Lo Yang are gimped by their 5”/38 gun arcs and punitive gun bloom.

The short 9.4k gun range of the Harikaze is actually a blessing, letting you quickly go dark and disengage from a gunfight.

Harikaze also has a wide range of configurations for you to pick from.

Harekaze can be suited for either an Akizuki-style destroyer hunter....

So what DD can it hunt?  Besides the Kagero, I'm wondering what it could outfight?

Benson? Kidd? Kiev? Z-23? Akizuki? Nup.   Maybe an Ognevoi?

The comparison to an Akizuki is a big reach...

I don't have the Harekaze, but if it can run like an Aki it can outgun all the DD's in its spread, save the Khab.

My vote is Lo Yang, I have good success in it. Kidd is a great ship and the heal makes it more forgiving. I feel like better Kidd player can beat the Lo yang though.

I have both Kidd and Lo Yang. I consider Lo to be the better of the 2. Lo got me to Rank 10 and if ranked had been tier 8 all the way, I believe that I could've Ranked out with Lo.

IMHO, the only advantage that Kidd has over Lo Yang is Kidd having a heal. But that heal aint worth a pound of pi$$ when you get focus fired on by every Red within range and are quickly deleted. (standard experience for DDs) It only helps in a DD vs DD brawl.

My vote is Kidd. Heal(and fantastic AA) give this DD a lot more room to play aggressive and actively do something. He can survive and heal back to try again even when he get cought in a bad scenario.

I don't have a Lo Yang. But base on  my ranked battle against Lo Yang I think he is more of a trapping ship. He should be very good against inexperienced players but less so to decent DD players. If any DD get cought by his smoke hydro combos, at least half of the HP gone and many times got killed. But once the other DDs aware this trick, they'll simply turn away and call for radars or just disengage and come  back after smoke expired. Lo Yang will be in trouble because he can't really out stealth or out guns others without his consumable combos.

I love harekaze and Asashio, but I feel that you really need a good team to make them work and don't have that carry potential compare to the Kidd. Peoples sometimes dodge torpedoes here and there without even aware those torpedoes.

Only it doesn't. It has 3/4 the guns, and half the hitpoints.

So saying it is like an Akizuki is a bit disingenuous.

The Harekaze can potentially outfight a Benson and Z-23. I've had to do it a few times when I ran into them in caps. But there are conditions attached: certain skills are needed, it will be costly in health lost, and mileage may vary depending on the skill of the players involved.

First Harekaze needs a high point captain with SE for the health boost to stay alive, then IFHE and ideally BFT. Even a mere 3/4 of Akizuki's firepower blasting away with a 2.7 sec reload is no joke.

Secondly, during the skirmish the Harekaze needs to be played with a bit of finesse. Harekaze wants to kite away from Benson/Z-23 and make them chase her. Benson only has 2 guns up front, Z-23 has 1, and if they want to use more they have to expose more of their profile to Harekaze. Harekaze meanwhile can run away, wiggling all the way, whilst presenting 4 rear guns and a very narrow target for the pursuer to shoot at.

I have won fights with Bensons and Z-23s with Harekaze, but it cost me most of my health and I had to play very carefully afterwards. Can't say much about Kidd, Kiev, and Ognavoi since I've never fought them in a gunfight with Harekaze. Last thing to say is that Akizuki will always beat Harekaze, don't bother trying to beat it at it's own game, spot it so somebody else can kill Akizuki for you. Harekaze can potentially beat some of the other t8 DDs, but I wouldn't call it a DD hunter nor would I be actively looking to pick a fight with other DDs. At heart it's still a Kagero torpedo boat, just one with respectable enough gun power for self defense, and other utility work like setting BBs on fire from smoke.

I have all of them and stopped playing them because of radar saturation. Be honest hold off on any of them.

A well explained post, Super_Dreadnought.

I'm sure the Harekaze can fight DD under ideal conditions. That doesn't make it a DD hunter.

The guy I quoted was giving advice that it can be a Kagero or Akizuki-hunter-of-DDs.  A DD that can possibly beat one or two other classes of DD, on a good day, in ideal circumstances, is not really a DD hunter.

DD hunter? or Kagero-with-better-guns.
