To make the combat mission visible you need to play one battle on the Indianapolis.

Maybe you have to win, or something else?

I played 1 match where I won, survived, and got 2 kills.   Just in case those are relevant variables.  After that 1 match, I had the mission show up as a 'personal assignments'

This is it; you must need to play the first task of the Indianapolis mission as the Indianapolis.

Does any historian here know the significance of '2,600 nautical miles of Indianapolis'?

(The Indy 500 has been run 102 times and the 52nd race was held in 1958, so it is not related to that.  In any case, that race is measured in statute miles.)

edit:  Thank you for your educational reply, Dr_Dirt!

USS Indianapolis FAQ
Q: When was the USS Indianapolis found?

The USS Indianapolis was found on Aug. 19 by the R/V Petrel, a research vessel owned by Paul G. Allen.

Q: Where was the USS Indianapolis found?

Mr. Allen’s team located the Portland Class heavy cruiser in the Philippine Sea, 5,500 meters below the surface. Because this is a war grave and property of the US Navy, the specific location is only provided to the US Navy for them to administrate.

Q: How was the ship found?

The original search area was defined and prioritized as a 2,600 square nautical mile area in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean, between Guam and Palau in the Philippine Sea. The ship was found using a combination of historical records, detailed undersea topographical data and advanced technology aboard the R/V Petrel.
