Since playing with the Atlanta-class cruiser I have noticed this ship's main gun range seem to be usually short when comparing it with other warship games i have played.  Therefore, I decided to do a bit of research and discovered WoW is indeed using the wrong specs for the main Mk12 guns.  The 11.1 km range is only achieved when shooting AA shell at an 85 degree angle and would reach an altitude of 37,200 feet (11.3 km).  But when shooting AP and HE shells the gun would be firing at a 45 degree angle and have a max range of 18,200 yards (16.6 km).  Thus this means the current ship in-game range is shorten by 5.3 km from true historical records.

Please refer to the link below for source information:

DEVS please correct this and thank you.

Distances are compressed in game, therefore all guns don't fire as far as they do in real life. Also, since it's a game, the developers can fudge stats as they please for balance.

Probably a WG balance thing although it would be tough hitting things with those guns 5k further out. Remember most ships could actually shoot MUCH further than they can in the game. On the other hand, had the US given one to the Russians, that one would have a 16K range.

Anyone know the longest 5"/38 hit on a maneuvering surface target?

The guns in game don't typically fire to the max possible range. They usually are balanced to fire out to the max possible range with a reasonable chance to hit something along with balancing for the sake of gameplay.

Yeah because otherwise we would be seeing 20km+ IJN Torps on most IJN ships, we would see 20km Secondary gun range, and the list goes on. Wargaming does have to balance the game with the changes they make lol.

I can see fudging a little but not as much as 5.3 km.  That is extremely unfair for a good class ship and wrong too.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ most ship have their gun ranges modified by 10km or more so...

Nagato class battleship range in game (without spotter aircraft): 20.5km Real life maximum firing range https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/41_cm/45_3rd_Year_Type_naval_gun: 38.4km

Konigsberg-class cruiser range in game (16.5km) Real life maximum firing range https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15_cm_SK_C/25 25.7km

And have you seen Atlanta's shell arcs? You'd never hit anything at 18km anyway so it would just be a stealth nerf.
