Hey all!

I decided to make an effort for the first time in Ranked, and today I made Rank 10!  I played the vast majority of my games in the Kidd and won about 70% of my games...took maybe 20 games total to make rank 10.

Anyways...

I was wondering what ships you all would recommend I play.  Currently, I have the following Tier 10's to choose from

Montana, Des Moines, Gearing, Zao, Shimakaze, and Hindenburg.  I will also have the Yamato shortly (its already researched, just need another 5 million credits to purchase).

I assume the short answer is...play whatever you play best.  I'm generally a good DD and CA driver...less so with BB's.

My Des Moines has a Surveillance Radar Mod that gives 40% more time to activated radar.  (When it's on, it goes for almost 1 minute at a time.)

I'm PROBABLY best with a Shima though.

Anyways, how often do you see CV's in Tier 10 ranked play?  Is a Des Moines a better choice for me or a Shima (also completely stacked with mods).

Interested to see opinions.  Thanks all!

Des Moines and Gearing would be my top picks, by far. Des Moines has radar and raw DPM where Gearing is an incredibly powerful and well rounded DD. Play the ship you're most comfortable with.

Play whatever you feel good at and comfortable in. BUT....

.....In Shim spotting and area control will be more important, and damage numbers will be uneven. You have better chance of keeping a star in a cruiser, especially Hindy, which outputs tons of damage in Ranked. The BB population varies widely, played 4 BB and No BB games.

CVs can be avoided, simply exit the queue when they appear. I have only seen one, a well known botter and AFKer whom WG has permitted to ruin 00s of games for others.

Probably gearing and Des Moines. I’ve seen those ships driven well carry battles.

Montana seens solid too.

Sadly, I’m trying to use a mino and struggling. Managing to save my star frequently on a loss - only I’m still on 10-0 so can’t lose a star anyway. Sigh.

I would take gearing over the shima if you want to play DD. Shima doesn't have the ability knife with other DDs and I just haven't seen it being successful compared to other DDs. For cruisers, it really depends on you.  For some, the Des and that style of play suites them very well and they own with it. Me personally, Hindenburg fits me much better.

The only CV battle I've seen in the tier 10 ranks was unavoidable.  Why?  The queue didn't show any CVs but was close enough that a small number of ships hitting BATTLE would dump us into battle.  And that's just what happened.  2 CV players (no bots) hit battle in the same instant and we dumped straight into battle without even seeing them enter the queue on screen.  Oh well, crap happens.

But CV's have been rare.  If you really don't want to see a CV battle, if you see ONE CV in the queue, you can just  exit the queue and rejoin in a minute or 3.  It all depends on the patience of the player wanting to bring his CV into a ranked battle.

The Gearing is pretty good, but compared to pretty much every other DD at tier 10, she feels very sluggish and slow.  On the flip side, her torps are very nice, whether you're using the TA skill or not.

Thanks for the responses.  I hadn't thought of dropping when CV's are in the que.  Good strategy actually.

I personally think that DD play is the key to winning in ranked...at least up till rank 10.  Since I've never played the rank 10 and better, was wondering if that is still the case?

While I agree that DDs are key, that "key" is only key when both sides have radar support.  About half the time, I"m the only DM in the match.  I've yet to lose a game with my DM when I"m the only radar cruiser in the match.  I play to WIN...not for points.  If that means hiding and popping radar for half the match....so be it.  When both sides have at least one radar ship, then...yeah...the better DD group often wins.

Quite frankly, I"m surprised by the lack of DMs.  For sure, some games have four (two per side).  But half have none...except me.  I presume folks are going with ships they can make points on to not lose a star on the loss.  If I'm the only DM, and we go up two caps to one...the mind set takes hold on the reds to play for points...not the win. Self fulfilling prophesy.

CVs are excruciatingly rare in ranked and that lineup counter is chronically  inaccurate. In randoms you could be in line and see 4 carriers and 2 DDs then end up with no CV in the battle with 5DDs per side. You could see also see the reverse- 0 carriers and somehow 2 end up per side.

Just play the game- don't dance around the elements that add a little adversity every now and then.

What is your most comfortable ships that you know the best?   Thats what you play.

Radar dominates tier 10 - 1.   RDF is a game changer.   Use it whenever possible.    Know your role  well.   Pushing caps isn't a priority.  its all on spotting, addressing your opponents, then team play discussion.     Once you get to ranked 5 - 1 everyone knows what to do.  We all know what ship class each other has and how to use it.  There is team talk for focusing targets but its almost expected how to setup and who to escort.

Mino and YY radar is very common.    Remember Mino, YY, DM if you can spot them you are already in their radar range.    KNOW ways to run, how to angle, and escape paths.

Stressing this...   BE RESPECTFUL.   not everyone is equal skill play to enjoy and try and rank up.
