May 9th is fast approaching when the USSR marched in victory over Nazi fascism that was all across Europe. However a steep price was paid many over 27 million citizens of the USSR died. Nazi Einsatzgruppen rounded up Jews, Slavs, Catholics in occupied lands executing anyone and everyone in roaming death squads. Jews were sent to concentration camps 80% of the Polish Jewish population was eradicated. The atrocities on both sides was horrendous.

From the letters of a soviet soldier a Nazi soldier was captured as a POW. A Red army officer said to the man “ you will play this piano all the way to Berlin if you stop playing at any time we will shoot you” he played for 22 hours and then stopped crying I’m tears. The Russians congratulated him, then killed him. The depravity of war brings out the heroic actions of many and the monsters they lurk deep inside us. Many we never have to deal with a war like this ever again. God bless Russia, the US and all other allied nations. All is forgiven to meine Deutsche Menschen. Ich drücke dir die Daumen!

Are you saying “You had many people in that group other than Nazis and white nationalists, the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. You also had some very fine people on both sides,”?

This is NOT the place for any type of a political discussion, especially one about which self-serving, utterly ruthless, inhuman dictator was worse. If you want to talk history, go to college. if you want to celebrate May 9th, go march in a parade. Don't bring that nonsense here, this ain't the place for it.

Your suggestion about how many deaths the German dictator caused might be correct; it may also be true that the Russian dictator killed just as many or more Russian people that the German one did. Both men were totally without compassion, completely self serving, and used whomever they could in whatever way it suited them to accomplish whatever sick, twisted goal they had at the time.

If you'd like to discuss further what a "Great Leader" the Russians had, I'll be glad to; PM me because the Forum is not the place for this. Not at all. This is where we talk ships, and neither one of these men ever sailed one.

How do you make enemies? Talk politics.

This isn’t about politics it’s about recognizing those who died. Can people think in these forums?

Intentional or not, the content of your OP will certainly provoke political sentiments and responses. You'd be pretty tone-deaf to not foresee this.

Though to be honest, this thread was derailed by the OP when he was typing it up.

Many can't.  Your post commemorating the dead is worthwhile.  Thank you.

... how many pages should we give this thread?

OP, while I'm sure you mean good, talking about the atrocities of the war like that (Red Army soldiers killing Nazi POWs and talking about Victory Day) and all that kind of stuff shouldn't be said here, as it can invite conflict. If you do want to talk about it, just talk about V-day from a neutral standpoint.

All sides committed atrocities, the germans, soviets and allies.  The best thing we can do is to remember so that doesnt happens again.

Fleet,

May 1st is a historic date especially for those that live in Russia and the former Soviet republics as it commemorates the symbolic end of World War 2, also referred to as the Great Patriotic War.

It pains me to lock and conclude the discussion of this thread as I looked at the post as a time to remember and reflect the soldiers, sailors, and aircrew that made the ultimate sacrifice for their respective countries.

War is something that our military men and women do not glorify or look forward to, but it is very much a part of our history and has shaped the world into what it is today.

Rather than argue and debate foreign policy and current events, let us take the time to remember those that served and gave their lives for what they believed in, their country.

"We are going to have peace even if we have to fight for it." - Dwight Eisenhower, US Army
