basics of survivability on cruisers?

Trying to take advantage of the free captain skills redistribution and one thing I’m considering is taking BoS instead of SI?   What are your thoughts?

SI is far more useful.

American cruisers can use the extra radar, and eventually heal

Japanese cruisers can use the extra DFAA and eventually heal

German cruisers can use the extra hydro and eventually heal

Russian cruisers can use the extra radar and eventually heal

British cruisers can use the extra hydro, heal, and radar or smoke (most benefit)

French cruisers can use the extra engine boost and eventually heal

 

Since cruisers are inherently support vessels, it's important to use your consumables to your team's benefit. Keep in mind, there are some tanky cruisers like Moskva, Hindenburg, Graf Spee, Stalingrad, or Kronstadt that would make good use of it if you get both. However, in each case, SI should be taken first.

For cruisers with heal, SI is most likely a much better choice than BoS. You should always pick SI. The value of BoS is more comparable to skills like Vigilance or survivability expert.

BoS reduces each fire on cruiser by 15%*30s = 4.5s. Fire with 4.5s duration does 4.5*0.3% = 1.35% of your life.

One extra heal can heal up to 14% of your total health. Remember fire damage can be 90% healed. So in effect, as long as you take an average number of less than 10 FULL fires per game, SI is better. This is not considering the other useful extra consumables SI brings(radar, DFAA or smoke).

If you use fire duration reduction or heal boost flags, SI will be even better.

Basics of Survivability isn't as big a deal on Cruisers as it is on Battleships.  A while back, WG buffed most Cruisers and Destroyers so that Fires burn less time on them.  You can see charts with Fire Burn times for different ship types here, towards the bottom of the page.

I think it means you will flood (receive damage over time) for 15% less time than you normally would. So if you normally flood for a minute (ticking off a % of your total HP damage for every second you are flooding) you would now flood for ONLY 51 seconds. Assuming you can't hit damage control. Most flood damage is repairable if you have repair party on you ship.

that's the question, flooding has no time limit, it's not 1 minute, it's forever, take 15% off is still forever

Only seems like forever. I believe both fire and flood have time limits, mostly based on ship type. General rule is BBs burn longer than CAs burn longer than DDs. Flooding does more damage per second than fire but you can only have one flood at a time, unlike fires where you can have up to 4.

Whenever I get flooding, it always says 1:30 to repair it. That's what it says on the wiki too. Where do you see that it's forever?

If your DCP is on cooldown when you get a Flood stuck on you, it's long enough until you die :Smile_teethhappy:

BoS is a big deal for some CA, typically ones that are going to get HE spammed a lot.  SI is always better if there is radar or a heal for the ship in question.

We run BoS on DM, Moskva, Stalingrad, Hindenburg and probably a few others that are eluding me at the moment for Clan Battle specs.  It makes a big difference with the level of HE spam that goes on, you can usually save your DCP for fixing broken guns or holding it until you are on triple fire.  BoS has bought a lot of our CAs time to disengage or just out tank opponents.

Are you running any skills to reduce the base DOT duration length like BoS or the flooding/fire flags?

Each of these knock a percentage of time off the base DOT length.

Not always. 

With BoS, the reduced flooding flag, the reduced cool down on consumable flag, and high alert helps as well, its possible to use your heal but is not necessary, and a heal boosted with the flag of course will keep you alive if you started out pretty healthy.  This of course is predicated on you not taking very much follow up damage/fires.  I have seen good builds tank through the floods until they can DCP it frequently.  The ship suffering this situation is going to lose a ton of HP, likely will need to blow 2-3 repairs before its really able to take its position in the front of the battle line, but its possible.

This is the difference CB affords people.  Without CVs in the mode people can really spec heavy into survival skills on their ships.  Its also critical why you never stop focusing a target until it really is dead.
