Sick of Battleships that won't battle

More of a regular game issue but MAN it's aggravating when some/most/all the BBs on team sit back, run or hide and hardly engage until the game is almost over before fighting in earnest.  Can't tell if they are preserving damage costs or like to go out in a hail of shells after their unsupported team is sunk but it's wrecking the game play. All I know is you can't call them out for being ball-less or you get punished for improper chat.. another game wrecking joy.  I want to see a PUNISH TEAMMATE button where at least 1/2 the team has to click and the offenders points are low to trigger the LOSE HP/XP vs getting anything for wasting our time. Worse than AFK actually as I can understand bosses, spouses and phonecalls can get in the way!

I hear you, I play BB fairly often and have over the past few weeks started to play more ballsy going into caps early even.

I can understand why many B.B. are choosing to fight from a distance, the current game of fire and torpedos is extremely punishing for any B.B. that gets within 12 k of the action

Service cost is the same whether or not you take damage. It's been almost 2 years since this changed in the game's economy.

 

They're just cowards, more or less.

I get that to a point but the amount of damage they can take shouldn't keep them tucked in behind islands, camped in a long-taken cap or a fleet of them going for a long excursion or chasing down a cruiser leaving the team to whither. Glad to hear you are also aggressive at the BB help.. its fun  actually!

BBs are still very passive. Perhaps WG could incentivize it with an achievement based on secondary hits or potential damage to prompt getting in close with immediate, direct gratification.

I said recently in another thread, half-seriously, that BB players that regularly get low scores and are reported for poor play should be banished to a Bath Tub League where they can fight rubber ducks until they discover the merits of fighting battles with some courage.

Just shorten max gun range. Most can’t hit anything beyond 15 km, anyway.

Yeah, like this idea would ever end well.  :Smile_facepalm:

Also, if you're going to say "sit back" you should explain in greater detail.  How far back?  Do you mean sitting out at 20+ km?  Or do you mean that they're not inside of 10 km?  If you mean the latter, then you can pound sand.  I'm sick and tired of all the hyper aggressive twits trying to force everyone else to play just as stupidly as they do.  When I play BBs (which isn't all that terribly often compared to cruisers or DDs), I generally prefer working the mid range, because it enhances my ability to fight my ship and work my armor, hence enhancing my survivability, while affording me a good range at which to be productive.

I agree with this only to a degree.  I don't see a lot of value in gun ranges beyond about 20-21 km. 

I really wish that they'd reduce the gun range on the Kongo, in particular.  20 km for a tier 5 BB has always seemed like a horrible idea.  For one thing, the Kongo accuracy just isn't that good, and certainly not out at 20 km.  And secondly, that 20 km range on the Kongo teaches newer players a bad lesson.  It should be limited to around 15-17 km, I think.

Also, I just don't see why a BB like the Richelieu has such an extreme max range.  (And I imagine that it's pretty similar with the Gascogne and the T9 and 10 French BBs as well.)

Usually two sides to the story...are the DDs pushing cap and scouting or all running and hiding behind islands too?  Well then this BB player is staying back thank you, as I will be spotted and targeted by 5 ships.  Is the CV player scouting with planes or playing the oooh so obsolete CV strike, and compounding the error by sending fighters to escort rather than scout?  Well then this BB player is staying back thank you, as I will be spotted and targeted by 5 ships.  Are the CA players supporting the DDs so when our DD gets spotted they are not insta killed and now we have no scout?  Well then this BB player is staying back thank you, as I will be spotted and targeted by 5 ships.  Will my teammates be with me as I come forward and lead the charge or will I look up and see them all running like little girls from one spotted ship?  Well then this BB player is staying back thank you, as I will be spotted and targeted by 5 ships.

Have been engaged in holding a flank recently in my Iowa, no mean feat btw, over 100k damage, end game and some Wag pings map and says " oh look at that terrible BB way over there, this is why we lose".   Yeah wow...thanks, but usually two sides to a story.

Plunging fire with scout plane has gotten me some brilliant citadels and strongly influenced the game, as the BB was hurt bad and now is gun shy.  You can hit at range, take practice.  I personally play the ship, so some BBs really are not good long range snipers, some are pretty decent at it.  Number one rule in WoWS inmho is "know your ship, know your enemies ships."  That alone will make you at least a below average player.

Well, I wasn’t perfectly serious. I mean the trickle down through the tiers and classes would be a huge change. I just lament the idea that because they have the range they should try to use it to avoid taking damage, and doing little constructive as a consequence.

Another thought on this, Thornir.

A change that I think might be good is this.  Change the spotter plane so that it doesn't increase a ship's range.  Instead, have it increase a ship's accuracy.  This way, it doesn't promote even greater range, but it does provide a worthwhile replacement benefit.

If guns were more accurate, wouldn’t that be an incentive to shoot from max range, though?

A) each class has its hazards and strengths. 

B) I no longer play BBs in Randoms, can’t stand the play style. 

Isnt it interesting though that the ships with the least health and armor - and lowest odds of survival - are the most aggressive? Five whole ships? I only see that many shooting at me a couple of times a game.

I think its rather ridiculous to suggest BB/s should jump out there on attack.......they don't maneuver good enough to fight that kind of battle.........now if you want BB's to fight like that then just have BB's in the fight........now they match whatever there plus/minus are against each other....don't have to worry about those pesty little triangles running circles and torpedoes all about them........even match.

Wait...what?

fear of your hard counter is a reason to stay back? My god, there are Cruisers and other DDs in the game! I must be doing it wrong! I keep going after the big ships to get close and kill them! I’m supposed to stay away from them?! Who knew??

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but its about to get worse when Asashio becomes available to all the players, thats my biggest thing against that ship honestly, its just going to worsen a problem that was bad to begin with

My two best scout plane snipers for a few initial Hail Marys have been Warspite and New Mexico.

I stand by what I posted......just keep charging out there, even in the co-op battles and see how far the BB makes against a just average DD fighter........BB in the open are dead ducks.........strategy is my offense when in the BB......otherwise I shoot out there in the little boats and do all the damage I can.......

Ok, I get that. But there needs to be a trade off. A full health B.B. at the end of the game that was “careful” and didn’t trade it’s health for damage or kills or caps is a huge detriment to the team.

The problem with the game as a whole now is nobody is playing the objective for the win, its all about damage.  CAs not supporting dds at capture points because they are busy setting fires on battleships at max range leaving your dds on your team to get rekt by their CAs that do support, then vision is gone because there are no little triangles to spot the dds so your bbs get rekt by torps and no caps are captured resulting in a loss but hey gotta love those octopus emblems right?  How many times do you see in chat I did 100k plus damage and its a loss?  Think about it.
