Using torp/dive bomber tail guns to swing fighter battles

I'm pretty new, but is it possible to do this? One of the most frustrating things in my experience is fighter battles of equal tier. It seems to be complete RNG who wins or loses, and I'm wondering if you can hover around the fighter battle with dive/torp bombers and use their tailguns to add a little extra DPS.

Nope the tailgunner dps only targets fighters attacking that squadron. If you want to win those engagements try to lure the enemy fighters near friendly AA. At T6 you get the manual attacks with fighters able to strafe squadrons adding some more skill to the equation. The WIKI can help answer some of the mechanics and there are some good videos on youtube to show you more of the tactics.

Okay, thanks

What he said is correct.

Best way to use tailgunners to scrape off fighters is to park over your carrier, or an allied ship with good AA, then micro control their course to keep them tightly in the close AA bubble. That way both your tailgunners and the AA will be shooting at the fighters. Keep that up...

...until they die, or you die.

I use the 'Evasive Maneuver' skill for my bombers.

If I see they are going to be attacked en-route, I hit the 'F' key on the group.  They turn, head home, and start shooting down enemy fighters that attack them.

This technique works against humans better than bots.  Bots know enough to disengage when they are overmatched and losing planes.  Bots also refocus if another strike group gets closer to a target.  The bot fighters are easy - just have two groups pull them back and forth until they commit to one.  Then the other squad has time to attack.

Are you sure about that? I read the wiki link you entered and there is one line about some squads defending themselves and no detail at all about the actual mechanics. With a skill and a flag that increase damage from rear gunners it seems more like an area affect like AA than only active when directly attacked by fighters. While trying to get my Bogue  to a higher win rate I've been experimenting with escorting my fighters with both attack groups and it sure seems like it helps erase enemy fighters faster.

Yep I'm sure, this is why when fighters strafe an enemy squadron at T6 and up they won't be taking any damage from the tail gunners because they arent locked onto the squadron. It's only when you right click onto an enemy bomber that your fighters take tail gunner damage when locked on.

ok , thanks....must just be wishful thinking. Still might drag a couple cv's into training room and have attack planes orbit enemy fighters just to see if any of em ever die.
