When I was a Sergeant in the USAF, this wonderful TV series from Canada came out on educational channels.

At the time, Beta-max recorders were $500 ($2500 in today's money), and I was sent out on deployment - so I couldn't watch the end of the series.

It was so embarrassing to the Reagan administration that it was never allowed to be replayed - and forgotten.  Seems it worked against political opinion and he was sanctioned as a Communist....  or Socialist..  or whatever they called the folks who made common sense back in those days - that conflicted patriotism.

It resurfaced on YouTube.  I wish there were better copies..  but I still highly recommend it to jog the memories of us who lived and served in the military in those days.

Those were very fearful times.  There were lots of folks who were very capable of blowing up the world with a smile on their faces.

1983 was such a special year. We came sooo close. Andropov, RYAN, the EU war game maneuvers in the fall. When the intel came back at just how few hairs had been left on the trigger thats when the west started to step back. Always a bad idea to push a wounded animal into a corner.

Good times.

I've always appreciated his articles when he was writing for the Globe and Mail out of Toronto. I didn't know anything of his past. Now that I know he was branded a communist, I like him even more.

Thanks for sharing @AVR_Project. Glad to hear you were able to find it again! I take it you were able to finally see the conclusion?

I often wonder why we went on full-force month long exercise and deployment when we did.  We were all glued to it in the dorm day-rooms when it was on.

I got out of the USAF in 1984 but encountered a VHS copy of a copy of the final episode - all streaked and pasty.  It wasn't available for rent then either.

On a whim, I did a YouTube search and got to see 3 of the episodes for the first time.  Yes - these are pasty, copies of copies too.

A search on Ebay today shows ZILCH for a DVD for sale.

With the way the world is reverting, we need this program restored - and rebroadcast today.

Some of the kids today are thinking a 'limited' nuclear war is OK.

The nationalist fervor in various countries is picking up and headed in the stupid direction again.

WAIT !!!!

There is an episode #8  :  "The Knife Edge of Deterrence"

It's missing.

It's not found on YouTube.   I don't believe it's ever aired.  It may have been censured and removed.

This series was very disturbing to military personnel at that time.

As indicated in episode #3..  We are all the same, and yet we were indoctrinated to think ourselves as Military Personnel to be superior to or adversary.

During World War 1, there was a Christmas break in the trench fighting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_truce   This was the last time that happened in World War 1, but there were also surprising good deeds by the Japanese during the early Pacific War..  But those ended too.  Total War..
