hi

So looking at the April calendar seems like some good events planned nice but a closer inspection we seem to missing any events that commemorate a major operation of the second world war.

But we do get a commemoration of a predominately late war land battle, a suicide run by the last few remaining IJN ships that were operational, again nice but not good enough.

Bravo to the historical department of WOWS/ NA for doing there homework for the month of April.

Some back ground information for those not well versed in the history of the operation I'm talking about

Operation Weserubung   ( Weser- Exercise ) April 9th - June 10th 1940: the most ambitious Naval Operation the Kriegsmarine had undertaken in the war so far and biggest seaborne invasion of the second world war to date.

The German Government was worried that the iron ore from Northern Sweden would be interrupted by the Allies so it was decide to simultaneously invade Denmark and Norway to secure the shipments from Sweden.

Virtually the entire surface fleet of the Kriegsmarine was used in the operation along with large force from the Luftwaffe as air support.

The Royal Navy too committed the bulk of there Home Fleet to incept and destroy the German invasion force but failed to do so in bad weather however throughout the campaign there would be numerous naval battles including the sinking of the Aircraft HMAS Glorious and her escorts and the 2 naval battles at Narvik which resulted in 10 Kriegsmarine Destroyers sunk.

The battle for Denmark lasted 6 hours as the Government fearing mass bombings capitulated, in fact the Army was ordered not to resist the invasion so there were few causalities.

Some Anti Government German Military Officers were opposed to the invasion of Denmark.

On April 4th Admiral Wilhelm Franz Canaris  head of  Abwehr  ( German intelligence ) informed the Danes directly.

On the same day Col. Hans Paul Oster  head of section Foreign / intelligence  OKW informed the Dutch Military attaché in Berlin Maj. Sass about Weser Exercise and Case Yellow  ( the invasion of France and Low countries )

The battle of Norway was a different story the battle was hard fought and with destruction of 10 German destroyers at Narvik the battle there and indeed all of Norway was in the balance.

However once Case Yellow began which forced the Allies to evacuate Norway did the Germans secure the country.

Despite heavy Naval losses on both sides it was a strategic German victory.

Norway would become vital part of Kriegsmarine Naval Operations for the war in the years to come.

WOWs has many ships and ship classes from both sides and yet there seems to be no mention of any type of Event to Commemorate this important Naval Operation.

regards
