Americans were made slim battleships because of that

Its no coincidence that most US ships were at the most 33 meters wide.

Nice pictures! (+1) Awesome to see the Hood was still up and running back then. (even though she should be in drydock being overhauled at that time instead of "showing the flag" everywhere)

Notice how high in the water the big ship are riding. You can the Lexington's (Saratoga's) belt. And the HMS Rodnol (Nelsol?) is definitely under a light load.

Is it normal to have that many people sitting up in the masts like that first picture? I know you would never catch me up there anyway...

Couple of neat photos of Iowa class battleships going through the canal. Check out how the beam compares to the width of the canal locks.

Lets not forget the most powerful warship to ever sail through the canal either:

Going through locks is a nerve racking experince at best, escpecially if their is a strong wind and or current.

Obviously there is potential for massive damage, but I would assume A BB is far better off going through the canals than the modern merchant ships that just barely fit inside.  Speaking of which has a battleship ever crashed into the I did a quick search and did not come up with anything... I imagine crashing would be rather bad for your military career.

It would most likely be a career killer for the Captain of the ship. The closest incident that I know of was with the USCGC Mackinaw. It struck a seawall while enroute to her home port during a shakedown cruise. Captain was relieved of his command afterwords.

Actually, my father-in-law was stationed in the PCZ and tells a different story of navigational hazards in canal, or lack of according to him.

I can name two. One is the sharp curve shortly before reaching Lake Gatun, this on the Pacific side, it is sharp enough that they only allow one ship through at a time. Also, erosion is causing some major issues, causing portions of the canal to be closed off in order for it to be dredged.
