How does it work? Is there a particular way in which bots target the players?

I ask because I've been playing the Hermes scenario like crazy, farming cresits using the French Camo, Wyrven, and Zulu flags.

Ive found that in playing my Gascogne I find I'm being shot at very little unless I take myself into a situation in which Im the only ship near the enemies.

However, in playing my Atlanta, I've found at times I'm targeted like crazy. Even at the rear, or farthest from the enemy, of the group I've watched as shells speed over friendlies or even the battleship we are supposed to attack and strike my ship or the water nearby. Some of the ships the enemy avoided shooting over included other cruisers as well.

Some key points that may become redundant so I'll address them before any replies.

No, I wasn't in the storm and neither were my allies.

I was at one point the farthest ship from the enemy.

I've played the Atlanta before in this scenario and it doesn't happen everytime but has happened around 3 times now.

Finally, I'm not crying or upset, just curious. It's just a scenario so it's no big deal, though I'm not a huge fan of the fact I wasted a Wryven Flag but I'll live.

Anyway, any input is appreciated and here is are some images of why you should take your Atlanta with all the economic bonuses available.

I always feel like they target the nearest cruiser that's visible to them. For instance, if you were not closest in your Atlanta to German ship X, I'm thinking you may have been the closest cruiser to that ship.

I've also noticed that once I lose 25-50 percent of my health in my Indianapolis, "every" German ship seems to target me.

The bots also seem to target the easiest to kill ships as well as a general rule.

Sometimes they just attack you when it would be a good idea to attack something else instead. Like attacking my AA spec Texas relentlessly with planes when there are better targets without as much AA. Other times I have seen bots send in planes, take AA fire and avoid me the rest of the match. I think each bot has a sliding scale of aggressiveness and that makes them do weird things sometimes.

From my experience,  and this is unique to Hermes, targeting priority in order is any ship within about 5km, belfast, fiji, atlanta.

Ive sat stationary full broadside to the 4bbs in the lyon at 8km and had all 4 focusing an atlanta 4km behind me.

Ive been in the Belfast/Fiji at max range and had every bot with the range shooting at me.

Otoh I've run the Indianapolis through several times without taking a single hit from anything but dive bombers.

I'd noticed a while back that bots in CO-OP would attack my Atlanta regardless of what other ships were in the area.  I even had a Bismarck switch from a DD about 3km away to target my Atlanta at around 12km.  However, I got shot at literally one time when in my Atlanta doing the scenario the day it came out.  I haven't tried since as we got 5 stars on my first attempt.  Although...  seeing the credits you're pulling in, I might have to do it a few more times anyway.

Keep in mind, you can knock out close to two daily containers if you have 2 tier sevens and haven't gotten their first daily win yet. It's a quick and painless way to get your containers (assuming premium account time).

Thanks.  One random battle with a Type 59 camo and flags usually gets me well over the amount needed for two containers too :Smile_Default:.

Plus running the scenarios with multiple ships is good for leveling a new or existing Captain.

It does seem the bots target Cruisers and/or Destroyers quite a lot.

Play PvE enough with a DD and you can get a Conga line of bots to follow you sometimes. :Smile_teethhappy:

My theory in regular co-op is this...the bots will be yolo rushing in force toward whatever DD is furthest forward in the beginning stages of the battle. It's almost like the AI programming knows which DD is furthest forward without anybody even being spotted yet. I try to tell my teams in chat that the bots will be yoloing me in my part of the map. It's frustrating when team ignores me. Of course, scenarios are different.

Good question OP. Yesterday I ran my new and totally stock Lyon in Hermes and didn't get a scratch. Not one tiny bit of damage. Yet running the Algerie the day before, it seemed like I had a giant bullseye painted on it and every bot plane and ship pounded the he** out of me. Didn't seem to matter if I stayed in the middle of the pack, or went alone. They all went after me.

You are right, Atlanta can really do massive damage. I got 5 stars first time I played the scenario using the Atlanta. But you have to use French stuff to get those bonus things like the ribbon mission and total damage count. I have been lukewarm about the Richylou because of the "all forward" turrets (hello Dumbkirk). But I have seen players totally erase ships with one volley with it in Hermes. So I think I may end up grinding for it. :Smile_Default:

Do you guys think they will ever offer the Atlanta again?  I would love to have it for scenarios.

They seem to put in back in the premium shop once or twice a year.  My guess would be it'll be on sale for July 4th weekend if nothing else.

Bots prioritize DDs in PvE, with good reason. A DD can do massive damage if left to roam around unchecked. That's why when bots are on your team and the bot team, they end up ramming each other into mutual destruction. They are FANATICAL about destroying DDs. PvP players that think they are king come into PvE sometimes and get a big disappointment. Bots can SEE you ALL the time. No hiding behind islands. Oh no. They will root your butt out and torp spam you to death. If a DD player actually lasts till the end of the game in PvE, he is one SUPER GOOD DD player.

Scenarios are more scripted than PvE. Otherwise the bots seem to play the same.

Yep. Bot DDs come charging at you full blast and do some nice zig-zagging and evasive maneuvers. From what I have seen, torps are pretty useless in scenarios for human players. The bots either die from withering canon fire, or evade them. Interesting that the bots you escort all seem to have those laser-accurate canon that they have in PvE. So you are competing against your own human players, PLUS the bots, to get damage and kills.

I have to disagree slightly my friend...I'm using different and selfish tactics in PvE in my Aigle and I usually have quite outstanding results in the Aigle. I agree about the bots, but I can exploit them because they change targeting priority a lot. I rarely get focused by more than 2 of them. Once I'm spotted in PvP, my targeted window rarely has less than a 4 in it. I feel like I'm a very good DD player in co-op and a feast or famine DD player in Random.

The ATL gets prioritized over anything, it seems.  I've used my ATL in the Hermes op with great results so far and I noticed immediately the same thing where, even when other cruisers are kilometers closer to the target my ship still gets prioritized.  When multiple ATLs are in play it's a little more confusing for the bots but I've been very, very close (too close) to enemies and they still go for other ones behind me.  I dunno, I've just been caught off guard a few times when I think I'm in a good spot and suddenly find some more shells incoming when I really don't need them to.

Joke's on them though, bwahahaha

I’ve only used a Richelieu I this scenario and I honestly think I have never been hit by a shell over 6 or so matches, and only took damage once so far by a torpedo

OP, bots will ALWAYS shoot the lowest HP target.  Being an Atlanta, you have 27,500 HP, which is likely the lowest total HP of any ship they see.

Indeed. Although the level of "painlessness" is relative to the level of Derp. The choke points are magnets for traffic Charlie Foxtrot's.  I've ended up bow surfing on one of the bot BB's near the end more than once.

Which isn't a horrible tactic in those torpedo soup endings so long as you take the torps and your principle gets across the finish line.

Based on the Atlanta screenies I'm seeing here, I either need to select targets better or shoot better.  OP, I don't mean to hijack your thread, so I hope you don't mind if I ask the other Atlanta drivers (and yourself, of course) - what are you shooting at, and at about what ranges?  I think I've put up around 350 hits as my best total so far.  Nothing like the 400+'s I'm seeing here.

Programmers Jokes on YOU.

Do you actually believe you are targeted?

There is a reason for ship restrictions.

Use AFT, get used to the lead for shells, and shoot at everything you possibly can regardless of the range.  There's no time for idling with an ATL.
