French BB most in need of a buff???

Gascogne.

A friend wanted me to recommend a ship he could do the new Operation with but unfortunately I had to advise him NOT to buy the Gascogne.

Same problem as the Richeleu, crappy guns and only 8 of them.

Can't overmatch but overpens like a champ.

Too easy to set on fire.

Most of the secondaries guns are useless since they can't penetrate anything except superstructures and they can't even pen BB superstructures. Seriously?

AA nowhere near as good as it looks at first glance because it is mostly short range

Both need a tweak or 2. You know there is a problem when you feel seriously outgunned facing a Tier 7 of the same line.

No the French ships are on par with their real world counterparts.

Richelieu acceptable, can make it to work and shines in operations. Gascogne... lightly better secondaries for worse AA and crappy gun layout. Gascogne not good, but those secondaries funny (funny, not good)

Definitively gascogne not a decent tier VIII, just for the guns (not good and bad position)

Without a doubt, Gascogne needs a buff. Tighten it's dispersion. Then maybe shave the reload a bit more or increase effectiveness of secondaries. As is, I don't even find it enjoyable in PVE.

Being on par with "real world" doesn't amount to much in a game that takes itself more as an arcade game than history simulator

And if what I've been hearing about the X is true. than that needs a "buff" (more of a tweak than a buff)

The T5 Bretagne doesn't need a buff, I am averaging 63400 damage right now on her.  I don't think I have had a game yet where I did only average damage, she is definately my favorite tech tree T5 ship currently.  That being said I don't have enough experience with the rest of the line to make a judgment.  I would say to wait a couple months to let stats have time to balance out but the line seems to be pretty decent so far from what I have seen of others.

Better dispersion would be good

I really like my Gascogne... she's like a faster Roma with more typical guns.

Having said that, her AA is a freaking joke - and an inexcusable one at that. Why does Richelieu - built before her - feature a much better suite, and Gascogne plods along with protection that's barely acceptable for tier 7, let alone 8?

I have played both the Richelieu and the Alsace a fair bit, and I run secondary builds on both (only have manual secondaries on Alsace). Both ships feel like they work fine. Alsace is actually my best ship so far. The secondaries on both feel like they could use a bump, though. With the majority of the shells being 100 mm, it feels like they could use some IFHE-like boost to penetration against BBs. However, the French secondaries seem to have better accuracy than the german ones, so they work fairly well on cruisers. Just my two cents. Both ships are good if you use them properly and choose the right targets, though.

Trick to Richelieu is deciding do you want main gun accuracy by getting aiming Mod or do you want secondary range instead...

I am not sure about the Gascogne but the Richelieu is very accurate. It might be the most accurate BB in game, at least at medium range. The guns need a tweak because they only overpen cruisers. Even angled hipper 10km... 6 overpens to the water line. It should get a 2 second buff to its reload speed as well, and another 2 sec for Gascogne because of how low its DPM is combined with the weak broadside damage especially against higher tier targets and cruisers. If these problems were fixed they'd be top performers at their tier.

France/Republique needs a buff... Armor that actually works.

It's true. Turning out, you eat 10k++ salvos from max range CAs every 5-10 seconds. Something is definitely very wrong, I've noticed it firsthand

This is not unique to the Republique, even Conqueror gets hit by really stupid random citadels thanks to the flawed protection that turtlebacks provide in game. I don't think it's historically accurate for a cruiser shell to be able to consistently penetrate so far down into the water and hit through 50mm of armour into the citadel but I am not a naval expert.

It has taken me awhile to adopt my play style, but I find the Gascogne okay as is without any need for a buff. In any event, the developers are going to want a lot more data before adjusting the Gascogne. The ship has only been out for a week.

Really early  in the process  - so far a bit MEH for me - but when you have multiple lines there has to be a cellar dweller - not sure you get a “buff” for just that unless something way out of line

I have both the Gascogne and Richairu and like them both. I would appreciate a tighter spread, but do rhey desperately need buffs? No.

Republique is broken so fixing something that is broke isn't a buff. Also There is no doubt it will get fixed.

I'm all for not releasing OP premiums but the Gascogne is just sad.

Republique is weak sauce.  should have put both turrets on the front, and the armor bug is annoying.  plus the speed boost gives you like 3 knots which is rubbish.

No one is asking for an OP anything, premium or otherwise. Gascogne's guns are just kinda sad. The Richilieu is pretty sweet and I'm enjoying it as is...Gascogne could use a touch of makeup...maybe just some lipstick!

I find both Gascogne & Richeleu fine, Lyon too.

but with all of them you need a 14pt captain to get the best out of them in the new Operation, as you want Advanced Firing Training to push out the AA bubbles and secondary's range & Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament so secondary's become more effective at causing minor damage and starting fires or finishing off DD, with Gascogne & Richeleu you can use Aiming Systems Modification 1 and still get ~8.8km secondary's, while Lyon can use secondary battery modification 1, as it has enough main guns to mitigate accuracy loss, however secondary range is still shorter than Gascogne & Richeleu by just over ~1.2km.

as for AA, Gascogne, Richeleu and Lyon when fully upgraded and with a 10pt - 14pt captain are more than capable of knocking more aircraft out of the sky than 2 or 3 Atlanta's that are not being played very well (though a single Atlanta played well and in the right place is still king of killing aircraft with its defensive AA fire mod 1).

for myself as someone who plays a lot of Operations and co-op, Lyon is a keeper for any Tier VII operations, Richeleu too for this operation and co-op, while Gascogne I will obviously keep as I paid for it, and between your Lyon captain and Richeleu you can have two slightly different captains, with one taking e.g. Fire Prevention & superintendent and the other taking concealment expert and vigilance.

as a guide Gascogne & Richeleu with ~8.8km secondary's and Manual Fire Control for Secondary Armament taken as a skill, the secondary's will contribute around 60000HP damage (inc fire damage) if the rest of your team is average assuming you just stick with the escort Richeleu, if the rest of your team is good then ships will spend less time in your secondary range.

The citadel aspect of it is though. Cruisers don't have enough penetration to get through anything but plating at range (even IRL). Random citadels are fine, but consistent? Something is very wrong.

One theory I saw that makes a lot of sense is the shell is coming in at an angle, autobounces off of the internal belt and into the torpedo protection, autobounces off of that again and into the citadel wall. This game, so far as we know, doesn't reduce shell speed/penetration after a bounce. The shell travels until it explodes and that's that.

The game is a hybrid of the two, it can't be a game without the history and you wouldn't get the history unless it was a game.  French battleships being balanced with the main powers outside of a few tiers would be very misleading. The French line isn't supposed to be as good as the other four, France was not a major naval power relative to the first four nations and while individual classes like the Richelieu were state of the art most of the earlier ships and/or designs simply weren't and this was the exception, not the ruke. France's best ships were usually a few years behind her peers.

France is a peer of Italy, not the main four nations in the game(even Japan in terms of quality rather than quantity), for example in the Washington Naval Treaty look how they were allowed to have less capital ships, for them the navy was simply less of a priority, whereas to the US, UK and Japanese(and briefly the Germans) it was more valued. The UK on the other hand was the major naval power in the world in almost all of the battleship era(USA largely rose with the carrier). The UK was the country that built the Dreadnought and required a "two power standard" where she had more BB's than the next two countries combined. Naturally this line shouldn't be expected to change the game's landscape the same way compared to the UK or Germans.
