What nation of battleships would you recommend if you want to get close to a target and fire as fast as you can as well as it having good armor?

German Ships are designed to get within medium or close range and attack, they have the armor and guns to do it, but you do want to improve your secondary guns to get the most of your German Battleships.

Honestly as it stands I would say none.

Since the secondary nurf on the Germans...they just aren't as fun to play.

Yea, when the Biz first came out it was a BLAST to play.  SOOOO much fun.   Now,,, not so much.  Can get 150-200 secondary hits and barely do 10k damage unless you're lucky enough to start fires.

Hindenberg is about it.  At close range if you are broadside to most bb's they will just overpen you, and you have a bit of a turtleback.  You have great torps, and a lot of fast firing guns.  

Just prepare to get focused to oblivion.  That often happens with any ship that tries to brawl.

KM if you're looking to brawling with other BBs (or anything for that matter) longest ranges in class; mostly HE focused. 

IJN if you're looking to brawl against Cruisers. They tend to have AP secondaries so a broadside Cruiser will likely eat a decent number of Pens.

French if you're looking for a DD deterrent or Fire Starter. Mostly HE, but if you're looking for HE alpha on secondaries you need to take IFHE. The French have the speed to get in and haven't good range. But the 10cm guns are better suited for AA unless spec'ed for. 

USN is worthy of note; DP 127s aren't the greatest. But since you're most likely to spec them for AA you'll get decent returns for them as SBs. Argueably they are the Most Versatile Secondaries depending how you spec. Most DDs already have 127s and do "fine" without IFHE. So a Secondary/AA build on a USN BB could looks something like this and still be effective as an AA platform. AFT, MFCAA, SBM2 - adequate range for Secondaries, minor range boost for AA, increased Focused DPS for long range AA.

If you want to look into Cruisers and secondary builds for them I'd suggest the KM T5+, IJN T5-8 (9+ requires IFHE), USN T6+ (DP 127s). Honestly any and all Cruisers are benefit from Secondary Build (the only way for the RN to light fires) BUT it is entirely dependent on how aggressive and comfortable you are with challenging Caps, DDs, and Smoke; also Torpedo Beating...

How does that work?  Hindenberg is basically invulnerable if you dont hit it's citadel?  Ive shot numerous Hindenbergs in my Alabama and shots just seem to vanish into thin air.  4-5-6-7-8 hits for a single 1310....

You can basically blow the whole top of the ship off, and if you dont hit the cit, lol 0 dmg...

Are you seriously trying to suggest that the German battleships are broken because they no longer have twice to three times the fire chance on their 10.5cm guns as the same 10.5cm guns on cruisers?

 

This change barely affected Bismarck or Gneisnau-- The only ships in the line that were even affected.

 

And it wasn't a nerf. It was a bug fix. Adapt and overcome.

 

To the OP: Sounds like the Germans are what you want. Their turtleback makes them pretty beefy at close range. Gneisnau, Bismarck, and Kurfurst especially are really tanky. Lower-tier, Konig is pretty good (Though I'll argue Kongo is better, she specifically isn't well armored)
