So after years of grinding up the US CV line, I finally got to the Essex, one of the ships I remember being hard to defeat in the hands of a good CV player back in the days when you had only US and Japanese ships and the days when the Midway had jets. Now I'm most likely an average CV player at best but I play them pretty often but ever since I got to the Essex, all the skills I had to learn over the years such as lining up the manual drops and strafing seems not productive at tier 9. Every-time I play the Essex now it seems like a guaranteed loss and now I see why you don't see many people playing them in high tier games anymore. Ive tried the training room and co-op to try to familiarize myself but still struggling. What can I do?

It's not balanced there should be more setups not less for the American cv's I was going to grind that line and then saw the changes so I didn't.  I thought when I saw this that maybe you wanted a ship that was tested in the alpha version of the game called Shinano. I should have read the whole title my apologies

I lucked out because I was playing the Lexington heavily before the CV changes and the Enterprise came along. When I got both the Shokaku and Enterprise I found myself playing the Enterprise more because the loadout was pretty balanced from the get go and the only thing I really had to worry about was AA. I didnt start playing the Shokaku until recently and that because its easier to fight against a Lexington in it now than it was before. Overall it feels like the Enterprise ends up on top out of the three especially if you have a 10+ point skipper simply for versatility and numbers especially when it comes to fighters

Lol its okay, I came in during Open Beta (missed closed beta because of a college course I was taking). But I agree with you. Its the classic case of changing for the "better" gone wrong. Don't get me wrong, when I was starting the grind to the Essex I did wish for access to a balanced loadout because seemed like you had to choose between Strike only (which pissed off teammates especially if you were facing an IJN CV because you couldn't support them but you could deal major damage) or Air Superiority (which allowed you to cover the team but you really could only deal nominal damage) It really seems like in the case of the CV changes, that it was done without really consulting CV players (idk maybe they did but it doesn't seem so based on my observation) but instead done to pander to the lowest common denominator. Maybe someone can shed some light into what happened for me.

Just play CVs in co-op; less issues with MM.

Whilst I'm only to Bogue, I have to agree that the carrier "fix" has taken a lot of the enjoyment out of carriers for me. Particularly since the lack of options means that I cannot run an AS configuration to protect teammates. As a primarily battleship oriented player, providing the air protection that BBs need, along with scouting targets, was the main reason I played. A one option strike carrier means I can't protect teammates, and have to keep my fighters close to my own strike groups because now that's my primary role again...

I dunno, the French battleships are shiny and new, and I know I like battleship combat, so I may cut my losses and run...

Sorry if this is a bit of a rambling rant, but I'm rather annoyed about the whole thing...

Hey @airkid1942, congrats on reaching Essex! That's a tough grind! She's a good strong boat and can take a punch. I recommend you stay with your allies and take out the big boys.

There are loads of videos etc you can watch too if you want to see the strategies that others use for this ship. Best of luck in your future games! :D

@airkid1942......I know how you feel.  I own the Lexington now and have enough HP and coins to buy the Essex but have decided against it.  I liked running an air superiority set up so I kill enemy fighters and protect my team.  We no longer have that option.

When I first got the Lexington we had AS setup.  But the "balance" took that away.  I kept grinding and trying to find a new strategy.  The Enterprise and Shokaku kept their AS option.  I have 1 fighter squadron and even though it is buffed to the teeth it not a match.  I am trying to scout one side of the map and my attack planes are shot out of the sky on the other side of the map.  Or I escort my attack planes and everyone on the team yells at me for air cover.  Its no fun anymore.  Its become a real struggle and that's not why I am here.

I now play the Independence when a challenge or mission requires running up big damage numbers.  I am going to use her to research all the fine points of being a CV driver.  At least it will be a fun project.

I am keeping the Ranger and Lexington because I think WG will find some way to "balance" IJN CV.  Or on slow days, I play them in coop and kill bots while I scream happily at my VICTORY.  .

It was a lot of work just to have WG change the rules on us.  I am now considering staying in T5-6 ships because its too much work to have WG take away the advantage of high tier ships on a whim.

All the better to have protection from your team then @sartt! I always find she works better with a few teammates around her

Yeah the US Carrier changes were decent for most of the line but Essex and Lexington especially Lexington got brutally murdered in terms of effectiveness. There are 3 carriers in the US line that can truly be considered equal/better then their counterparts and 2 of them are premiums. Saipan, Enterprise and Midway are the only carriers in the US line that are regularly fun to play. Essex was never really good to begin with. ( My opinion) I can't really talk too much about it other then the fact I did horrible in it when I played it regularly like I'm talking 30% win rate horrible. Now the Lexington though it went from able to compete to no matter what you're dead. Lexington with the 1 fighter can't do anything. An Enterprise can easily win the air battle and so can a shokaku.

I would recommend for the Essex just saving up Free xp and going to the Midway. That sounds kind of stupid I know but I do a helluva lot better in the Midway then I did in the Essex.
