For some time now I have been going back and forth playing the Mahan and the Sims depending on the mood I was in. I actually enjoyed the Mahan because of the three torpedo tubes. After reading a bunch of posts on the Benson I looked at my finances and saw I was able to afford it. After purchasing it I went to put my Sims commander in the ship but I couldn’t without retraining. I thought you were able to move a commander from a premium ship to a non premium ship without  retraining? I wanted to use him in my Farragut but I had the same issue.

I have to say though after playing the Benson I don’t think I can go back to the Mahan. It took a few games but after I got used to it I didn’t have too much problems even against teir X ships. Even with a commander undergoing retraining.

The commander always has a specialization for a certain ship (tech tree or premium).

Premium ships don't care about what that specialization is.

All tech tree ships do care.

You have it reversed you can put a commander into a premium from any ship from that nation and the put him back into the line ship without retraining. I don't have any captains for my premiums. If you put the commander from the Sims into the Benson and retrain him you then can use either your benson or Farrugut captain in the sims.

Unless you got your Sims commander w/the Sims when you bought it he may not actually be your Sims commander but may be from another ship altogether. You can't actually "train" a commander for a premium ship...any commander you assign to it is still able to transfer to the original ship it came from & retains the specialization for that ship (some premiums come w/their own commanders & some don't which is why I worded it that way as I'm not sure if Sims came w/a commander as I don't own it).

You can transfer any US commander to the Sims (doesn't have to be a DD commander...BB/CA/CL/CV commanders will also transfer to Sims or any other US premium you own...skills may not match up ideally but they can all go into it for farming 1st win bonuses (example: That would apply to Sims if you had no US DDs...you could run another ships commander in it to get the 1st win bonus from the Sims...although of course it is best to use the premium to train the commander of the ship type that matches the premium so commander skills match up better).

It's usually best to run your commanders in the ships they originally come from so they build XP on ship at same time (to get you up the tree faster) & just use your premiums to farm the 1st win bonuses from to train your commanders faster for the tree ships...but then again the Sims has the hydro advantage that the other US DDs don't get so it's easier to upgrade your commanders w/that advantage.

I do believe your instant affinity for the Benson is probably based off the fact that you're used to the Sims & the Sims is based off the Benson.

Thanks for all the help. I’ve been moving my DD commanders up through the line and when I got the Sims I thought it would help him progress faster which it did. But I didn’t understand why he wouldn’t go into the Benson without retraining. He done with that thanks to a few flags I had. Now I’m back with a full commander.
