Tales from the DogPound: Episode 8

 Captain Comstock, Battleship Texas 1941.

Captain Comstock wanted to see me after the "skirmish" he called it the Gulf of Mexico. I was escorted to his quarters while he was looking at charts and smoking a pipe. "Captain, Ghostdog here upon your request" the Ensign says.

"Yes, yes, come in Ghost." The guy was impressive. You could tell that he was a kind man. Also a warrior and sailor to the core. Hardened by years at sea and by being away from family for months at a time. He takes a long draw on his pipe, looks at me and says "You know what we are up against?"

"Sir, I really don't know honestly." "Couple of months ago we were a bunch of stray dogs and a crazy [edited]cat that escaped from the pound." "Lester came up with this hairbrained idea that you sailors would like mascots and support for the cause that it is you are fighting for."

"Ghost, there are forces out there that want to overcome our country and allies." "Allies, I say." "Yes others that we fighting with." He  says.

"When you say others?" "Countries Ghost." Hey says. Now my dog brain is attempting to assimilate all this. I have this urge to have one of those I'm scared [edited]less tinkle on the carpet moments but I ain't gonna do it now. Not in front of Captain Comstock.

"Sir, you might fill me in on the situation ok," I say. "Come here" he says as he pulls up a chair for himself and me. I hurt so bad I can't get in the chair so he picks me up and sets me in it. Captain Comstock took his time telling what had happened. Poland, the Cheks, Manchuria and China, Dunkirk, Barbarossa, Phillippines , France, Battle of Britain, U-boats and then Pearl.

I stare at him. I have a tear running out of my eye. "Captain Comstock, Sir I didn't know."

"It's ok Ghost, go get some sleep and check on that cat Lester, kinda like him." he says as he gets up. He turns to me and smiles as we leave his quarters.

I have a lot of thoughts on my mind as I make my toward my room. Other sailors are laughing and talking. Some stop and talk to me. Give me a pet and scratch. Feel good, kinda like I belong you know. Knock on Lester's door. Really worried about him. After  a moment I hear him coming to the door. "hey Ghost" he says. "Rough day today."

He's hurt, burned and limping. Crawls back into his bed and asks "Ghost we ok?" "Yea, sure buddy we are all right." " You talk to Captain Comstock?" "Sure did I say." "Tired and hurt Ghost." he says. "Hey cat, you need anything brother?" I ask. "Yea Ghost, I don't feel so good, you mind staying with me tonight, you know just in case?"

"Cat let me grab a pillow ok and I'll be right back." I snag a pillow from my room and get back into cats room as fast as I can. Push the door closed with my nose. Hop on the bed with the pillow. "Cat I'm here buddy." He's already asleep. Look at him for a moment and then pull my pillow down to the foot of his bed and yank some covers over me.

I Lay there for a long time and take in what all has happened to me. Months ago I was nothing. Now I am part of something. My best friend is a cat. I'm sleeping at the foot of his bed hoping he lives through the night aboard the Battleship Texas. As I fall asleep I see grey ships shooting and Cat and myself......

Here you go. A medic is not a vet but I patched up poor Lester as best I could.

Cats is tough.

My Cleo fetched up on my lower deck with a broken leg (both bones).  I rushed off to the vet, who put a cast from toe to hip.  Within days she was back to teasing her big brother to chase her all over the yard.

I asked how he lined up the break.  Vet says that in vet school they had a saying, "Keep the cat and the bones in the same room and they will heal."  So I ended up with a gimp cat with a leg about 5 degrees off...  She lived a long and happy life.
