UNDER CONSTRUCTION - THE IMAGE HOSTING SITE I EMPLOYED HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS. I SHOULD HAVE IT ALL FIXED IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

Welcome to the Paint Locker! Before you get started, here's how to install the custom ship textures posted here:

1. All of the ship textures I create are available for download right here on Page 1. The rest of the forum posts in this thread deal with historical discussions and information associated with the ships, themselves. I upload the texture files to my Google Drive (GD) in a .zipx format that must be downloaded and extracted to your resmods folder in the WoWs root directory.  On my system the location of the game is: C:\Games\World_of_Warships_NA\res_mods\latest game version, e.g. 0.7.12.0

2. Use these files at your own risk and Always backup your resmods folder before installing new files. I have many capable assistants who graciously test my files to ensure they do not cause client crashes, so if your computer or game blows up it’s not my fault.

3.  Now you must hide the in-game camo by installing a modified camouflages.xml file in the resmods folder. A WoWS modder, Aslain, has an excellent hidden camo mod that is the easiest and best way to install that file - his latest version may be found here. Ensure you click on the [direct] portion of his download link to avoid false virus alerts. I use it exclusively, now, as he keeps it up to date and errors in the camouflages.xml file are a common cause of game crashes. In-game camouflage will now be hidden but you still get all the bonuses inherent in that camouflage. Just make sure you double check to ensure you actually have an in-game camouflage selected, as my camouflages provide no bonuses

Now it’s time to shop for the ship skins you would like to have - they are organized by nation and ship type, starting with the:

United Kingdom and Commonwealth

The entire U.K. and Commonwealth line offered here are color-matched to ensure a uniform appearance. A common, color-matched set of catapults, directors, finders, AA guns, torpedo tubes, radars and deck fittings (misc files) which I call “UK_bits” is also available to  make your updated collection of UK / Commonwealth files look really smart.

Boats, Catapults, Directors, Finders, AA Guns, Torp. Tubes, misc files, etc.

Spoiler

UK_bits - If you plan to download any of my UK / Commonwealth camo files you need to start with these if you want things to match.

UK and Commonwealth boats and rafts - this set of boats are painted in the correct inter-war and early war Admiralty paint schemes. If you have already downloaded the UK_bits above, there is no need to download and install these as they are included in that download. I just wanted to offer a set of correctly painted small craft for those who choose not to use the full set of UK_Bits

Battleships and Cruisers

Spoiler

RN Mediterranean Squadron in 507c Light Gray - These ships are presented as they would have appeared during the inter-war period, while operating in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. They are offered as a complete, color-matched set, primarily due to the large number of shared textures in the U.K. line of ships. . The color is matched to the UK_bits and all of the ships in disruptive camouflage available for download here, e.g. the Queen Elizabeth disruptive  RN paint scheme, is fully compatible. So you could have half in 507c light gray and the rest in disruptive camo and it will still look right. The misc file included with the download hides the insignia on the top of Hood's turret 1.  Here are screenshots of the squadron (HMS Bellerphon, Orion, Iron Duke, Warspite, Queen Elizabeth, Hood, Weymouth and Caledon).

HMS Dreadnought (T3 Premium) 1914 and 1916 - this download includes two optional paint schemes, a WWI 507b dark gray and the postwar 507c Mediterranean Light Gray adopted for overseas stations. The dark gray scheme does not appear to conflict with any other ships due to shred files. I updated the UK_bits to standardize the color of all searchlights and signal lamps (black).

France

The French Navy Collection I personally use is color-matched to ensure a uniform appearance. A common, color-matched set of catapults, directors, finders, AA guns, torpedo tubes, radars and deck fittings (misc files) which I call “French_bits” are also available to  make your updated collection of French ships look really smart.

RF Turenne and Courbetas they would have appeared late in the 1st decade / early 2nd decade of the 20th Century. Offered as a pair, due to shared files.

Dunkerque (Premium) - This is a fictitious dazzle paint scheme that assumes Dunkerque survived and was refitted in 1943-44.  The camouflage pattern is based on the premium camo that came with the Gascogne. It may not be historically accurate but it is still pleasing to the eye and is consistent with other French battleship paint schemes during the latter years of WWII... Vive la France,  Vive la liberte and Vive la Dunkerque!

Chung Mu - This ship was transferred to the ROKN in 1963 and I have been asked by several folks where I came up with the idea to paint her in this particular scheme.  I based it on the model a scratch built model constructed by Son, Jung Gun. You can view his work here. Based on some additional research I do not believe that is a historical paint scheme. What I believe is the model builder constructed the ship from wood and he wanted that to be obvious when it was displayed. Based on that I am offering the ship in 3 seperate schemes: The Brown scheme shown below, a ROKN haze gray scheme and a WWII USN Ms22 scheme worn by USS Erben before her transfer to the ROKN.

USA

Boats, Catapults, Directors, Finders, AA Guns, Torp. Tubes, misc files, and fixes, etc.

Spoiler

USN Haze Gray Bits and Pieces  - this mod is a must if you use my USN files. Just make sure you use it wisely as my Ms-1 BBs are an exception to the haze gray standard. It gets rid of the aqua tone and replaces it with a standard haze gray formula that works well with just about any skin of mine and most done by other artists. It includes all misc, radar, director, finder, catapult and common files.

USN 5/38 Gun Fix - This file updates the USN 5/38 gun file provided by WGing during a recent update. Without it all ships using this gun will have a glitch on the back of the gun mount. I will update all of my downloads, accordingly, as soon as I return from vacation.

Destroyers

Spoiler

USS Sampson DD-63 - Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the bottom of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

USS Smith DD-17 (Premium T2) - This skin is based on an actual photo of USS Smith that was taken while entering New York Harbor in March 1917.  Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the bottom of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

Download

USS Fairfax 1918 (Wickes) - This skin is based on two period photographs of a Wickes Class Destroyer, USS Fairfax (DD-93),  that were taken during her builder's trials.  I had to make a few small changes to the camouflage pattern to account for a shared bulkhead texture amidships.  Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the top of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

Download

USS Dent DD-119 (Clemson) - This skin is a "historical" skin created by using an actual period photograph of the ship's port side, that was taken circa 1918. The starboard side is patterned after an actual camouflage scheme used on ship's that were contemporaries of USS Dent, so it may not be accurate but is plausible. The colors are also my "best guess", based on the fact that I do not have historical documentation on USN. WWI paint schemes. make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the top of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

Download

USS Nicholas, USS Farragut and USS Mahan - offered as a triple download, as they share numerous textures. This allows you to have all hulls with matching equipment. These are complete reskins and are all my work; however, I used the same camouflage Measures and patterns as Tanz, just in case you don't want to use the entire ship set. The colors I used for Measures are matched to the USN WWII paint chips. Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the top of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

USS Roe DD-418 (Sims T7 Premium) alternate color scheme - Like most modders I sometimes agonize over "getting it right, so I spent several hours researching the N-5S Sea Blue color used in Ms12 modified, which was a real education. Apparently Ms12 was quite short-lived and the N-5S came in 3 different versions (A, B and C). The color closest to the one I used in the first version I released is version A. After much searching I was able to find a paint chip of this color and I felt that the color I originally used didn't have quite enough of a greenish shade to it. Now this type of thinking is a slippery slope as ships sun fade very quickly and how an object reflects light in real life, versus small objects like model ships, never mind how color is affected by a computer game's ability to accurately render color is enough to make you insane. So I reworked the texture to better match the paint chip, without getting too anal and accounting for some fading and version 2 reflects that changed. As I believe in giving folks a choice, I decided to offer both to you. If it means anything to you I believe version 2 is more accurate.

USS Birmingham CL-2 (T2 Chester) - In 1910 USS Birmingham was the first ship to launch an aircraft  from a ship.  In WWI Birmingham escorted convoys across the Atlantic and was part of the US Navy Cruiser Squadron operating out of Gibraltar. The American ships adopted the radical dazzle camouflage schemes that were popular in the Royal Navy. This skin is based on a photo taken of the ship's port side. No photo or side elevation of her starboard side has ever been found, so I based that portion of the camouflage scheme on HMS Amphitrite which had a very similar side elevation.

USS Flint CL-97 - 1944 - (T7 Premium) and USS Juneau CL-52 (Atlanta, T7 Premium) - 1942. I created these texture, based on patterns originally created by Jim Kong for sister ship USS Atlanta.  Jim was one of the best WoWS artists to ever grace the pages of these forums and an inspiration to me, personally. I am indebted to Jim for granting permission to use his patterns as I wanted to offer these textures to the WoWS community so that his work would not be "lost in the mists of time". Don't forget to install the "usn_bits" peripheral files, available at the top of this section of the The Paint Locker, if you want everything to match. USS Juneau is the final resting place of the 5 Sullivan brothers who were lost on 13 November 1942. On 17 March 2018, the wreck of USS Juneau was located off the coast of the Solomon Islands, by Paul Allen's Research Group, onboard RV Petrel, at a depth of 4,200 meters - God rest their souls and those of the 682 officers and men who served with them onboard CL-52

USS Des Moines and USS Salem - Both of these ships were only painted in a mono-chrome haze gray, so these are fictitious paint schemes based on typical Measure paint schemes used during WWII.  The one for the Salem is identical to the in-game camo for this ship. I gave up trying to update the camouflage.xml file to use in-game camos I liked, so I just use the WGing patterns and do them my way.  Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the bottom of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

This early-war ensemble of US battleships are painted in historically accurate Measures Ms-1 or Ms-21. I'm releasing it as a group because these ships share main / secondary armament textures and many peripherals that make it difficult to release any other way. zFireWyvern has an excellent Ms-1 scheme for a USS Pennsylvania Class BB that matches my Ms-1 scheme. Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the bottom of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.  Inside of this download you will find the Ms1/2 optional parts you will need.

USS  North Carolina BB-55 A (A & B hulls), USS Alabama BB-60, USS Massachusetts BB-59 and ensemble. These camouflage schemes are mostly historical, with minor changes made to ensure matching paint schemes on 5"/38 gun mounts. I included 3 camo version for these mounts: Lt. Blue, Dull Black and a tricolor Blue/Black/White that was inspired by the mounts on USS San Juan CL-54. All three of these paint schemes are compatible with my light and heavy cruiser skins. Many thanks Tanz and TheStarSlayer for laying out the original camo patterns for the USS North Carolina and the USS Alabama, respectively. These skins were a tremendous amount of work, but I think it is some of the best work I have ever done.  Make sure to download and install the USN bits available at the bottom of this USA section, so that all of the vents, torpedo tubes, etc. will match too.

USS New Jersey BB-62 late '43, '44, '45 - I created 4 separate skins so that players can sail BB-62 as any variant of the in-game Iowa A, B & C hulls or the Missouri. Yes, very, very odd...they really need to do a better job of moderating.

I think or you ask strange questions)? download of course! everything is fine), although it is saddened by such simplification of schemes, for example measure 22 and just gray, but this is a story)

Hey, USNA, I saw your post in another thread about believing your original thread was deleted for not having the updated version number in the title.  I suspect that may have been what happened to mine, as well.  I noticed that some mods have [ALL] in their title rather than a specific version #, so I've decided to use that in my new one, because it does accurately describe these skin mods: they work in all versions, and don't have to be updated with each patch (unless something on the original texture gets changed).  So you might try that.

I spend a great deal of time making these skins and I don’t do final anti-aliasing until I flatten the skins to remove all layers. Once they are flattened,  making changes is very time consuming, so I like to see what you guys think, before I do that. I really prefer to use historically correct skins, if at all possible, unless it’s a post WWII “paper ship” or a postwar ship that shares turrets with a WWII era ship (USS Des Moines is a good example). Most French ships had historic paint schemes. In the case of the Panasian ships WG has lumped ships together from many different countries, so I must ensure conflicts don’t occur with turrets, gun mounts and misc files. So keeping these ships’ skins pretty basic helps in that regard.

I'm also quite open to making non-historic skins, just let me know what you have in mind and I will be glad to consider it.

OK, Fushun and an updated Anshun (small quality control fixes) are ready for download. If someone would like to have non-historical camos for these ships, or any others for that matter, just let me know what ideas you might have and we can give it a try =D

OK, Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF) - if you have downloaded the T8 Hseinyang from me before you should delete file ZSD005_Hsiang_Yang_1945_a.dds and ZSD005_Hsiang_Yang_1945_ao.dds

If you really care why, the answer is WG is trying to make me crazy and here is why...

1. The T8 Panasian DD is call "Hseinyang" in-game

2. The Texture file for the the A and B hulls for the "Hseinyang" is called  ZSD004_Hsien_Yang_1945_a.dds

3. The hull for the T10 Panasian DD is called "Yeuyang" and the hull for the Yueyang is "ZSD005_Hsiang_Yang_1945_a.dds"...after all this I got confused and had to fix it...alkl better now.

You can't make this stuff up =P

Chung Mu - This ship was transferred to the ROKN in 1963 and I have been asked by several folks where I came up with the idea to paint her in this particular scheme.  I based it on a scratch built model constructed by Son, Jung Gun. You can view his work here.

I just luv that Chung Mu paint scheme =D I moved the hull number slightly forward to match photos of the actual ship. As a 27.5 year veteran of the USN I can tell you for a fact, side number location changes during a ship's life are rare...too much damn work to move them, unless the work is done by a shipyard.

Ok sports fans =)

Here is a version of the FRA Algerie that I am experimenting with and I would like to know what you all think. This is basically an historic scheme, but I was disappointed by the fact that all four turrets on the ship use the same texture file. The actual ship's national markings were only applied to the roof of Turret 2. For that reason I moved the French national markings to the bulkhead below Turret 2, as I definitely wanted French players to have a ship with the tri-color. It may not be the sexiest skin out there, but it's pretty much what she wore and that is my usual approach. If anyone would like to have her in a non-historic scheme just give me some ideas and we can also give it a try.

If you are a fan of Japanese destroyers and you have the Harekaze and / or Kagero, you absolutely must have this skin that Mebius created. This skin is a true masterpiece and it can be found here. Check it out =D
