....if you've seen this new map on the PTS you might've had the same reaction as me:  

...great!....finally some new maps... ...but just looking at this one, you'd know it might well be a non-starter... ...at the beginning, I put "freakish" in the open chat... .....someone on our side put, "****ing stupid map" or words to that effect. ...I thought, if people put Tears of the Desert at the top of their hate list like I've seen, they'll hate this even worse.....there's not much of a way through to the enemy for most of the map, and the A zone is almost completely blocked off north/south for anything like a meeting engagement to take place--with high mountains, etc...I had to go from south of A clear to the C side and up the map edge to get into action without obstructions...we won, but I think it was strictly from having a better CV player...

don't get me wrong--I want new maps of course and I'm glad they're in the pipeline, but this one looks like it would take a lot of adjusting to and at the end the only good thing about it is that it's equally a pain to both sides...

It's kind of hard for most of us to offer an opinion, considering that we haven't seen it.

However, I will say that they've been pretty bad at map design since the late beta. It's been hit or miss, with mostly misses ever since islands of ice was ruined.

u got me.. ...yah I can recall asking if ppl missed the old Islands of Ice (expecting a yes) and not even knowing that it had had an even older iteration than that--both of which ppl said they preferred to the current one....

...furthermore the instant I hit "submit" I realized I should've put this in the PTS feedback not here....not thinking in time is kinda my way...

That sounds a lot like one of my least favorite maps = Shatter. Always mountains/islands in way and you have to sail forever to get shots or even see the enemy (or even the caps!).

I know as soon as I saw it that it would likely not be a fun map to play. A limits the engagements that happen. B is going to be a spot that bbs don't want to push in. The islands north and south of it create limited ways in and out. Cruisers won't want to push in because those same islands are a little too far away to be effective cover. So that leaves c which is cut off from b fairly solidly but for a couple gaps.

The original version of Islands of Ice is VASTLY better than those that followed.  (I've been playing since Open Beta.)

I have played it a half dozen times on the PTS and I have come to the conclusion if you spawn on the south side of the map..

Might be a case of it being hard to make decent new maps that aren't overly similar to decent existing maps.

i have tried that map, i can confirm it's based off china....the smog is real!

jokes aside, i feel like it's too small of a map for tier 10s, maybe magnify the whole map by 1.2x or something?

i really like the middle islands though

While there may be some of that Skpstr, it doesn't look to me like they're even trying all that hard to do it.  This map looks pretty much like all of the other high tier clone maps.  3 empty rows for the north and south spawns, with 4 rows full of islands in the rows between the spawns.  Yawn.  Same old, same old.

Why not try to come up with something that conceptually similar to Big Race for the mid or high tier?  Or put Riposte into the randoms rotation?  IMO, there seems to be a real lack of originality in the map making department.

Yeah, could be that WoT maps take less effort. Basically, make 3 lanes, do whatever in between. Plus, in WoT, you can make fairly similar maps "feel" different, by mixing up some minor elements, and having a completely different setting. (ie. urban vs. desert) Plus, with all the land battles in different locations, you can add elements of historical battlefields.

TBH, I'm not skilled or experienced enough to hate maps, once I get used to them. (used to hate Strait and Estuary, until I got used to them)

It's called sleeping giant because bunch of people will fall asleep from the camp fest on that map. No DDs in their right mind would go anywhere near any of the 3 points. No BBs wants to go near points either because they will all be afraid of cruisers slinging HE at them behind islands. What you'll end up is just bunch of cruisers humping the islands waiting for some suicidal DDs to say "[edited] it" and rush in to suicide, so the humpers can fire a few salvos.

yeah, only played it from the south side so far, in a BB. ...the big island directly south of B and the way A is cut off in and of itself means that there's really no safe way in except to go all around to C and up....and I nearly got sunk by one Hyienyang or whatever the hell it was....guy said he got 206k dmg and just barely didn't sink me too..

This looks like A and B will be slugfests, and C will be the one that most teams go for as its in the open.  Thats what I gather from a glance. Lets see it play out on the live server, before calling it the tears map of hatred.

Our team won from the south side when I played it.  It is a hard map to play, but is very strategic.  If you can quickly rush and get into A, you can control both A and B.  There are shooting lanes from C towards the A and B campers, so C is just as important.  B is a fish bowl but if you take it with A fast enough, you can negate the value of C.  There are so many different strategies that can work on this map.  Camping isn't one of them.

That Western cap makes me think of "Hotel California", you can check in but never leave. A DD parked at each end could torp anyone who goes in there when they try to exit.

I just went *sigh* when I first saw this obvious crapfest. It's a lot like Shatter, the worst map in the game. The devs apparently believe that maps shouldn't breathe, and they especially hate open water. It's really sad. 

@Crucis suggested in another thread that the devs are making maps primarily aimed at the Russian server meta, where everyone charges in. Perhaps thats the problem.

I saw it the first time and like I said above, I knew this flat out wouldn't work except that it sucks for both sides....it probably sucks worse for the south...A is cutoff completely to both and the big island south of B channels all the big dogs into a death funnel east of C or else they're simply not in it...

...as for Shatter, that debuted in ranked a few seasons ago and it seemed like it came thru the rotation a lot...A and B are open to the DDs for spotting and capping but troublesome for the BBs in close....B is a deathtrap for both sides (there's plenty of death traps in different maps in confined waters, like with Trap in B or Hotspot with A and C) because there's no wiggle room once you're in except to drop and dash straight back out....

...I got used to Shatter as a DD/BB player but it took a while and you have to be prepared to die in B but get one of theirs at least....or else leave B for later...it's not as bad a map as Sleeping Giant looks......
