It's a lot easier to earn regular XP to move up the tech tree than it is to earn free xp for free xp ships.  I'd get the nelson... unless you really hate playing the Izumo.

I have the Nelson and have to say that any comparison between the Nelson and the Izumo is like night and day.  For its tier, the Nelson, with all 3 of its turrets facing forward, is VASTLY more comfortable to use than the Izumo.  If you want to switch from having the enemy on your port side to your starboard side, the Izumo's C turret might as well be an X turret because it has to make the same amount of traverse ... without the benefit of being able to  fire to the rear.  But with the Nelson, "flipping" your C turret from aiming left to aiming right takes only a very few seconds.  Really no more than it takes the A and B turrets, as long as the enemy isn't in the narrow cone forward that's blocked by the B turret's barbette.

I like the Nelson.  Other than having no turrets in the rear of the ship, about the only other problem it has is that the Nelson is a bit on the slow side.  But it's not Colorado slow.

You have no tier 10's, only 9 total battles at tier 9 and just 7 battles in the Amagi.  You are not ready for Yamato.

You can get it but you will be a liability to your team and will likely lose more games than you'll win while you learn to play it.  Skipping the Izumo is a bad idea (the ship's better than she used to be and is a good trainer for Yamato tactics).

EDIT:  Never mind, you play PvE far more than PvP.  Knock yourself out.  Just don't bring that thing into PvP if you do get it.

Use the free on the Nelson.  Nelson is a good ship, superheal is great at tier 7, and 16 inch guns.  Handles well, and is  pretty good credit earner.  If you are short on credits, Yami will not help in this regard, unless you get premium camo, and even with the 20 camo, if you are using premium consumables, and with premium account, will usually earn less than 100k credits clear of costs.

I only brought up the Izumo because you can get the Yamato by playing it a lot, whereas the ONLY way to get the Nelson is via free xp.  I'd always save the free xp for the free xp ship and get the tech tree ship through regular xp.

OP is primarily a PvE player so while your criticisms are probably accurate for PvP play, OP can presumably enjoy the Yamato just fine in Co-op matches.

Nelson you can only get with fxp. Yamato you can grind to. Get the Nelson its a crazy fun ship and premie so you will make quite a bit of credits. Also its play style is unlike any other BB, truely unique.

Congrats on making the right choice.   Now get your shiny new Nelson into the tier VII PVE scenario of the week and farm up lots of money and captain XP while the farming is good.

Nelson is ~excellent~ for the scenario this week.  It's pretty fun for randoms and other stuff too.  :)

Nelson

Awesome ship and can earn you a bit of XP and credits, not as much as Missouri of course.

If what has been said is true and you only have a few battles in Amagi, no, you are not ready for Yamato. Tier X is a whole different game then the lower tiers.

Just got the Nelson the other day... it is a very fun and unique ship to play with.  Just don't think you're getting out of tight spots on speed.  It ain't happenin.

Both, if you have time and patience.

You can get Nelson now OP since you said you got the FreeXP.

You can still research Yamato by regular grinding without spending your FreeXP.

Yamato is a tech tree ship so she's not going anywhere.

This route may also get you more time to get acclimated to Izumo because she sails close to what Yamato does, i.e. a pig.  Your FDG sails nothing at all like Izumo and Yamato.  Izumo will force you to be very conscious about your position, angles, while trying to leverage your guns.  The temptation to show the 3rd turret is there and will pay off at the right time.  In the wrong time, it'll get you rekt, just like on Yamato.  You simply can't speed up and turn around, and everything will be cool.  You can make a 180 degree turn in front of the entire enemy team with FDG and survive, not so with Izumo and Yamato.  Once you commit there is no turning back.

Personally, IJN BBs were the 4th line I ever worked on, 2nd BB line ever for me.  I got to Amagi played her and all that, but got impatient, and I FreeXP'd to Yamato skipping IzumoI got rekt hard.  Amagi may as well belong to a different ship line because of how vastly different she is compared to Yamato.  I eventually got the hang of Yamato but only after getting schooled mercilessly and my stats suffered as a result.  However way you get to Yamato, don't be an idiot like I was and think you're invincible.  I quickly learned the vulnerabilities of the ship and had to account for it.  Only then she got easier to play, but again, it's nothing at all compared to the other BBs you played, OP.  Grind through Izumo and learn what it's like, or get schooled hard at Tier X Yamato with the very steep servicing costs.

My quick jump from Amagi -> Yamato soured my experience with the latter because I was getting crushed.  I regretted being an embarrassment to my team teams.  It took a while until I was a passable Yamato player and only then did the sour feelings of the ship go away and things got brighter.
