Should the in-port picture of the commander's uniform and cover be updated by the game to show his/her current rank? That is, shoulder boards and hat brim. I think it would be a nice touch.

Depends on the Navy: US, UK and Commonwealth nations do not have shoulder boards on their Winter Blues (which is what they wear in games) ranks on those uniforms are shown on their lower sleeves, so it could only be their Officer's peaked cap that needs updating, which it does at the appropriate ranks from what I've seen.

When I was in the Army, there was some complaint about how Beetle Bailey had been a buck private for 25 years. Therefore, in the comic strip that was run in the Army Times, and nowhere else, he was given the rank of a specialist. Speaking of Beetle Bailey, Mort Walker just died last week.

You can change the appearance of your commanders but it's a bit of a process to do so. I changed one just to see if I could. If you want to do this just search -- there are plenty of instructions here in the forums. Myself, I don't worry about it as admirals wouldn't be commanding destroyers anyway.

That would be cool. Wouldn't mind seeing extra ribbons and stuff on my best Commanders.

I agree, they need more medals and ribbons. US Navy admiral's only get 2 rows of ribbons ... meanwhile in real life a Lieutenant with 10 years service has more than 2 rows of ribbons!

Napoleon once said that if he had enough pretty bits of ribbon to give his soldiers that he could conquer the world. Recently the services have been plagued with what is called award inflation. I know WWII veterans who served on the front lines and fought nearly daily for over a year, yet only came home with nothing more than a WWII Victory Medal and a Campaign Medal.  Now, a fresh soldier just out of training and stationed overseas has chest full of medals. American generals are beginning to look ridiculous with all their pretty bits of ribbon plastered all over their uniforms.
