Trying to improve - question on statistics

I have close to 8K battles, and have advanced to tier X on all lines except CV (tier VII) and Pan-Asian (tier VIII), so I have a good grasp on the game basics/tactics. But I feel like I am no longer improving.

Are there any other statistics out there that are more useful than the standards of win rate (I'm stuck at 58%) and average damage (I'm at ~57K, climbing now that I play mainly tier X)?  There is a lot of discussion on these, and I have come to the conclusion that they are a reasonable indicator of performance, but they don't identify any areas of weakness.

One area that I can't seem to find much discussion is main battery accuracy (found on your 'summary' page).  Mine is 40%.  Is that good?  Bad?  ok?  I know that, like all statistics, it can be swayed by what ships you play (for instance, if you play Atlanta a lot, you probably would have a lower accuracy just do to the floaty shells), but I play a mix of DD, BB, and CA that should balance it out.  For completeness, my torpedo accuracy is 13%.

Average Potential damage maybe?  This could tell you if you are good at dodging?

Bottom line - I feel like I have stopped improving.  Unless somebody like Kombat Wombat wants to give me some lessons, I don't know where to focus to improve.

IMO it's really the combination of stats that tend to be a decent measure of my play.  Survival rate is a good example, but of course this presupposes you're not just camping on the edge of the map and not contributing to the team as a whole.  I'm not sure that looking at stats in isolation is going to help too much, but you could look at playing with people you consider better players and soliciting feedback or even sending some replays to better players for criticism.  There are a few streamers who do this from time to time and some of the stuff they point out can be very useful.

@PointyHairedJedi convinced me that I might want to check my consumables before I press the big "Battle!" button... :cap_yes:

The typical statistics don't provide particularly meaningful feedback to people on the upper end of the range, to be honest. If you really want to keep improving, you'd be better off looking to a more competitive setting than Random Battles.

I think K538 has nailed it. Once you get to a certain level, you will want to look at stats and how they interact. Also how do you impact the battle regardless of what the stats say. I too would suggest divisioning up with someone or seeing if someone would review a replay. I'm not great and I'm pretty much still a seal, but from my time here on the forum, those seem the best options.

I would love to be above 52% WR but I will likely never get there.  My main battery % is around 27-31% which I consider average.  It really depends on the ship - I try and be above server average in damage and hit rate on every ship I play.  Some I do well in - others not so much.  Compared to me, your stats are what I would consider above average and really pretty darn good.

More game play  and trying to do better is going to result in better stats, but aiming for better stats in certain areas is not going improve your game play necessarily.  Study each ship and learn its vulnerabilities.  That way, you can exploit those vulnerabilities whenever you see them in battle.  That alone will increase your success rate, even with the same accuracy as you are currently experiencing.

@G_Potter You're clearly a competent player. The numbers indicate that you have a solid grasp on game fundamentals. What's better is that they're trending upwards. However, you may feel like you've hit a plateau... we all do at some point. Some people are okay with their plateaus, and there's nothing wrong with that. If someone is trying to break through that plateau, such as yourself, you can go about it in a couple different ways. Namely, knowledge, application of said knowledge, and experience. The former comes in the form of game mechanics, armor layouts, etcetera. Some are easy to pick up, others take more time. Once you know something, you have to apply that knowledge effectively and consistently enough until certain behaviors becomes habit. This could pertain to map positioning, aiming, consumable usage, ammo selection, and so forth. Lastly, there's experience. You seem to have a lot of experience with mid-tier ships and you do extremely well in them. Moving into higher tiers you've noticed a meta shift. As such, you'll have to adapt accordingly. This mostly just comes with time, and it largely depends on how quickly you can learn.

If I'm to make one recommendation based on your numbers, I'd suggest that you play a little more cautiously with your ship such that you can stay alive for the end game. You have the ability to carry games, but your survival rate is a bit low. Being a good player does nothing to affect the outcome if you're sitting on the sidelines hoping that your teammates don't screw it up. This is especially noticeable in your higher tier ships which makes sense because mistakes there are punished much more quickly. As you advance in tiers, guns become more powerful and more accurate. You can't make the same mistakes at high tiers that you might be able to get away with at mid tiers where the meta is brawlier.

Hope that helps.

If you're interested in div'ing sometime, shoot me a PM and I'll give you our clan Discord link.

I don't  have the skillset the OP has demonstrated but one area where I felt stats let me down was that when I transitioned from a BB main to a more diverse player my "improvement" stopped and I - by the stats- got worse. In fact, I've really found that as a general player I've improved substantially across all platforms... but it took sufficient time to cause a dilution of my stats. I think I'm on a gradual incline again made ever slighter with the increase in sample size during the learning period.

I don't think you'll ever be able to improve unless you set a personal goal for yourself... 58% is really good, 40% hit rate is outrageous (and I'm a guy who values good aiming)... Average damage is really competitive...

Trying to get to a 60% win rate with your number of battles might be a stretch unless you're going to spend a couple thousand in tier 1... so I'm not sure that's the benchmark you want to reach. More survivability (didn't check but... still) would inevitably lead to more average XP... and more damage. Maybe that's where you want to aim?

I don't know... there comes a time when you have to really ask yourself if you feel like you're competent at the game that you are. Enjoy it- since it is a long, often ugly road to travel on its own without pissing all over your own boots.

I do find that I need to play ships that I am comfortable with and played a lot if I want better stat.        playing lot of different ship and grinding makes for lower stat.       that is part of my issue in that I stock grind and play all ships.       i am happy enough with my stat though.      I play solo mostly and  when i do div up, I do see about 5%  increase in wr .  (with my clan)

you don't need to play t1,  rather t3 stlouis played well is a monster.

first i gotta say........stats across the board is not that useful.....

you need to compare ship by ship

take for example wombatcombat that you mentioned, you take your .....ummm say yamato, compare to his yamato, then look at the dmg/pot dmg/kill/survival rate for both of you in the same ship to get an idea where to improve

as for your overall 58% wr.......i think we are pretty similar LOL

im also at 8k games, and the early on stats started to have an effect on me......took me 4 full months to bring mine up from 58% to now 59.99%

with 8k total battle count you wont be moving your WR quickly, so be patient and let it slowly rise

For me I improved by exposing myself to a broad number better players.  There is always something to learn.

Consider taking Wombat up on the offer, or shoot me a PM and I'll invite you to CUTE's discord.

Looking at your numbers, The only thing that is out of the ordinary is that your survivability  rate is hovering at ~40%. I'm going to conjecture that you typically die too early  (around mid game). You trade very well and more often than not you sacrifice yourself to give your team a big lead/advantage. However, in WoWS, it is extremely common for people to take excessive risk or simply play stupid when they are ahead and throw away  an obvious easy win. I suspect that if you play more safe, and survive to the end of your winning games, that could easily make up 3-4% in WR and push you well above 60% consistently. IMO the ideal survivability rate should chase your WR since you had influence through the end of every game you win and you literally did all you can on every game you lose.

58-60 is about where the wall is for solo carry rate. You can't control every single game. If you really want higher win rates Division with other good players is really your only option.

You guys made a very good point, I don't live to the end of a lot of high tier games.  I do ok at positioning at the beginning of a match, but then get too focused on killin' stuff and get out of position.  Not as big of a deal at low/mid tiers, but high tiers you get focused down fast.  That was what I was looking for, something to focus on to try and improve.

Appreciate the offers to div, my internet is so slow I can't play/voice chat at the same time (I have to get my wife/kids to shut down all Wi-Fi devices to play - I'm not the most popular dad when that happens.....)  I'm going to give this a go for a couple of weeks, I'll PM you guys if I have any more questions.

Thanks for the feedback.
