Little White Mouse's guide is the correct one. Skimed through it and most of it cheaks out. The first one from reddit is stupid and the writer clearly didn't do his reaserch. Capping will give you an ez 1k XP.

WG did nerf recently how much XP is gained for capping - probably not enough but as noted WG has decided to have the focus be in capping rather than actually having some skill driving warships.   Now, if WG were to improve the rewards for liting and keeping enemy ships lit, we might see some more intelligent play from likewise cloaking ships buuut that isn't terribly likely anytime soon.

This BTW is why Ive found much more satisfaction in Scenarios than any other mode - it actually has you driving warships in something akin to what they were supposed to do depending on class; not just herpaderp into an arbitrary circle and that alone deciding victory.

I think the nerf got it pretty close to perfect, if not exactly.  While I benefited a great deal from the old 1k cap system, that did make it too easy to top the leaderboard in a DD.

That said, capping requires a great deal of skill, particularly when you're talking about high tiers where half the ships on each team have radar/hydro.  Certainly more skill than trading broadsides at 18km and/or YOLO'ing into 6 enemy ships because "I has torpeduhs!", which seem to be how at least 50% of the player base think games should be played.
