Who Radared/Hydro'd me?

I just was playing ranked.  I was driving a Lo Yang. 

RED team had

2 Amagi

2 Bismarck

Edinburgh

Atago

Harekaze

 

I encounter the Harekaze at B  (rest of green team went to A).

I smoke up. I turn on MY Hydro.  I'm INSIDE my smoke circles.  THEN Hydro/RADAR detect lights me up.

Closest the Harekaze ever got was 4.4km but he turned away.  He was at 4.9 when the detect lit up.

The Bismarck's were never closer than 10km.  The Edinburgh got as close as 5.4km.

This was from looking at my replay.

What don't I understand about Hydro or RADAR?

How? he never got closer than 5.4.  The Edinburgh that I have lists ship detect of 4.44

Edinburgh can mount radar in place of smoke. Due to RN CL frailty it is almost never done to the point that people can forget T8+ RN CLs can mount radar.

"Players can equip the following consumables on this cruiser: Damage Control Party, Repair Party, Hydroacoustic Search, and a choice between Smoke Generator, Spotting Aircraft, Catapult Fighter, or Surveillance Radar."

Radar Edinburgh is about as rare as Radar Minotaur for the reason Meatshield_No13 said.  However, Radar Ed isn't too bad a Radar mount.  Her Radar range is 9km, which matches her concealment range when fully specced for stealth.  Edinburgh also is decently sturdy as far as RN CLs go.  She doesn't get multi-citadel obliterated the way later tier Neptune and Minotaur do.

 

For Tier VIII Cruisers, both NOLA and Radar Ed can have Radar ranges practically matching their concealment ranges.  Radar 9.1km for NOLA, concealment 9.0.

What can I say?  I knew that the British could mount radar, I just looked in the wrong slot when I was looking at the Edinburgh after the battle.  I think with maybe 700 battles between the Edinburgh, Neptune, and Minotaur, I've gone radar once.
