Ghostdog and Snargle

A parody of "Pancho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt

Sailing the tall ships, my friend
Was gonna keep you lean and mean
But now the ships wear skins of iron
Their boilers fired with kerosene
Been sailing since you were a boy
It was your one and only dream
And you almost cried when you said goodbye
To serve the ships of steam

Ghostdog was a pirate, boys
His ship, it shone like polished steel
Its guns were free upon its deck
For all the honest world to feel
Ghostdog met his match, you know
Down on the Gulf of Mexico
And nobody heard his dying words
Ah, but that's the way it goes

And all the cutter captains say
They could have caught him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness, I suppose

Now Snargle, he can't play the blues
All night long like he used to
On the day that Ghostdog fell down south
Snargle wrapped him in a shroud
Then they laid poor Ghostdog low
And Snargle took his ship in tow
Where they finally ended up
Ah, there ain't nobody knows

And all the cutter captains say
They could have caught him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose

Now, the poets tell how Ghostdog fell
And Snargle, he's living in cheap hotels
The Gulf is quiet, the wind is cold
And so the story ends we're told
Ghostdog needs your prayers, it's true
But save a few for Snargle too
He only did what he had to do
Ah, and now he's growing old

And all the cutter captains say
They could have caught him any day
They only let him go so wrong
Out of kindness, I suppose

Yes, a few gray sailors say
We'd raise a glass to them any day
Like us, they could only sail so long
And that's the way it goes...

I really think that this is my best parody. In fact, it's not so much a parody as a rewriting of the song in a sea setting.

Either way, it's another job well done.

::>As follows

DogPound on patrol. Rough night Sir. Received message. Many thanks. We've taken many hits tonight and lost crew members but we are still underway. Commander Skip piped your Parody on deck during battle. It was inspirational. I think I actually saw a tear in Chief Butkuss's eye tonight and he's one mean dog. Crew is doing good. Been training up new litters as they come aboard.

   DogPound always is there Sir.

One of our great songwriters, here covering someone else's tune.  R.I.P. Townes.
