Older Man

A parody of "Piano Man" by Billy Joel

It's three AM on a Saturday
I'm a-sittin' here, still online
My old cat's staring up at me
Thinking surely that I've lost my mind

I said, "Why are you down there a buggin' me
Cause you're always a-bitin' my toes
I'd think that even a barn cat would realize
That they don't really smell like a rose"

La, la, la...

Think of the past now that you're an older man
Think of the past tonight
Cause there's more time behind than ahead of you
And you ain't gonna end life alive

Now when I was a kid my mother would say
"The old men can be distant and rude
All they do is sit 'round the fire and talk"
But like many she hadn't a clue

It was only when I was a soldier
That they told me why they'd hung with their pals
They had once, long ago, served their country too
In the Ardennes and on Guadalcanal

Oh, la, la, la...

Yes, I was an American soldier
Trained to be strong and enduring
I, and some others just like me,
We guarded the borders of Europe

But as I waved at the Russians and they waved back
I wondered if something weren't right
If we soldiers ourselves were quite friendly
Why were our countries both geared up to fight?

Think of the past now that you're an older man
Think of the past tonight
Cause there's more time behind than ahead of you
And you ain't gonna end life alive

I hit the road and traveled all o'er this land
And I spent many a cold night alone
Thus I've learned not to dwell much on lonliness
While some others just drink or get stoned

And I once was some kind of hero
Out saving lives with my peers
But that life is far behind me now
And I wonder just what I'm doing here

La, la, la...

Think of the past now that you're an older man
Think of the past tonight
Cause there's more time behind than ahead of you
And you ain't gonna end life alive

Thanks!

You Air Force guys were with us wherever we were because you took us there. I flew on Air Force planes to California for desert training, to Canada, to Germany, and once on my way to a war that nobody's heard of because it got cancelled.

OP, that's a little somber compared to your other creations, you feeling okay?  One thing I've learned from these forums is that there's a whole bunch of us older humans who play WoWS.  That's kind of cool. A good bit of shared experience.  If you're down hang in there, cause the days are getting longer.  Also, if you stop putting that salve on your dry feet your cat'll stop chewing on your toes.

Not really feeling all that somber at the moment, I was just fitting the mood of the parody to the tone of the song itself. However, it is autobiographical.

LOL, that darn cat thinks I'm its mama. It was a half-starved, four-inch long kitten with matted hair and a rat tail when it showed up at the shop. I fed it, cleaned it up, and then tried to give it to some distant cousins that live down the road, but they already had a couple of cats. It got to following me around everywhere so I figured it was going to stay and I had better name it. It was about the scruffiest thing I'd ever seen so I named it Scruffy.

It's the darndest cat I've ever had (all the rest of my "pet" cats have just shown up too or were kittens of ones that did). It's by far best mouser I've every seen and isn't afraid of anything but the mower. If I cut down a tree, and it hears the crash, it comes a-runnin' to see what I'm doing and if it can "help." When it was a kitten it used to "help" me put my boots on in the morning by untying the one I'd just tied.

About the funniest thing I've see it do was a few months ago when I was digging a ditch for a French drain. That cat would run down the entire length of the ditch, pop out at the end, run around the house, then back into the ditch, over and over.
