Dear Developers of World of Warships,

I am young individual who had the pleasure of hearing my Great Grandfather (now 92) tell me stories of his past time aboard the USS Albert W. Grant as a gunners mate. As a new servicemember, I like to hear from vets who have experience to give to me. Even if they are from other branches. So my great grandfather got to talking to me this Christmas about how things are in the military these days and I was quick to sit down and start talking to him. He never really opened up about talk of the military before. I had only known him about 20 years now. As we got to talking my aunt whispered over to me, "This is great, he never has really opened up before about this kind of stuff". So he got to talking about his time in the U.S. Navy. So many stories. Like the time the ship had forgotten him, and he had to take a Captain's Gig back to the ship. The place where he even slept, because he was uncomfortable sleeping below decks most the time. So he made a hammock and slept under the gun he was assigned. They even had a monkey aboard their ship at one point, which soiled an officers uniform.

I got to digging on his ship, and jogged his memory of other interesting facts he had forgotten about. He wasn't even hesitant this time to tell me the night his ship was almost sunk. How they didn't know if the torpedo run they made was successful or not. It was possible he said. He also says, the guy who stated that a shell that landed between a sailor's legs was a myth. He found the shell on the deck near the gun and picked it up. Stamped on the side was USS Boise. He was furious. He walked it to the XO. He never seen it again after that he said.

He had never opened up about that story. Who would? He lost 38 friends that day, and 104 were wounded. His ship almost sunk. I tried before asking him on Veteran's Day during my time in middle school to place on a card on the wall with other Vets to honor his story. He was very shy to talk about it. The conversation lasted 30 seconds. However whatever reason it was, that night he went on for about an hour it seemed. Maybe it was just a bond between two servicemen, who knows. It was great. My grandfather built a replica model of his ship, and it sits in a glass case in the basement where my Great Grandpa is currently staying for now. His wife just recently passed, and my Grandfather and my Grandmother (her dad) have him stay at their place now and then to watch over him, and spend time together.

I think it would be a great addition to World of Warships to add this historic ship to it's current collection of destroyers. Who doesn't want more ships? This ship has a great but, grim history in the Navy. It's also great to see others of this community talk about it's history in posts I've come across.

It would be great to see it added and being able to possibly show it to my Great Grandfather that people have not forgotten his story, and what him and his crew had done.

Thanks

Black Dog, there are already 2 premium DDs in the game based on the Fletcher class DD.  It seems highly unlikely that they'd add a third, just for the sake of a single veteran.  After all, we're not even talking about a museum ship.  The USS Albert Grant was scrapped at some point in the 1970's.

We already have four Fletchers in the game. I'd much rather have actually new ships in the game than more clones of ones we already have.

My grandfather served on the USS White Plains, an escort carrier.  He was part of a 3-man AA gun crew.  During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, they were attacked by kamikaze planes.  He and his crew shot one down that prevented a direct hit, but the plane crashed so close to the ship that large pieces struck his gun position, killing his gunner and seriously injuring he and the gunner's mate.  He never told me any stories, and my mom related that to me.  Oddly, Wikipedia mentions the kamikaze attack but said it only resulted in minor injuries.  I learned she was also fired upon by Yamato during that battle.
