see title.

Im curious to see what it is that keeps everyone playing the game, amidst the constant sea of QQ and the wails of WAAAAmbulance's we seem to lose track of why we play.

I personally love naval history, going back to the age of sail, ive played games like pirates of the burning sea because of this love, WOWS is another rung in the ladder of games i play with naval themes

More seriously though, I actually enjoy the game. I absolutely am obsessed with WWII era naval history. I love how real the models are in the game. I legitimately enjoy the gameplay too, in spite of the times when I get seriously triggered but overall I enjoy it.

Because I was better in ships than tanks.

Also ship kill sounds are awesome.

Love dev strikes and topping BBabies

Don' forget those one salvo full up to dead shots...

Nice thread. I play for a few reasons.

  • I love warships.
  • KanColle culture.
  • I enjoy the slow pace of the game. It allows for a more thoughtful and less reflexive approach.
  • I like this community (believe it or not).
  • I like the balance between casual and competitive.
  • I've invested about $500.

Some other stuff too I'm sure.

I play because I loved to swim growing up. Swam in creeks, farm ponds, public pool in nearby town. I get to swim a lot in WoW.

I play because I have a love of naval history which blossomed back in my Battle Stations Midway days. Plus this the closest I can get to my most loved ships without jumping into the ocean after them or in case of the Tirpitz when those jerks cut her up

Why do I play? Because I love naval warfare. Best game I've ever played and I was around when Pong came out. Love the forums and talking to guys about ships.

I love the gameplay... err... the uncomplicated, relatively level playing-field gameplay of ...

Well, I'd be lying if part of it wasn't that I feel distinctly above average, both in statistics and in matches. Having something in which you feel that you are good, and which can provide you with a sense of accomplishment is important.

However, i gain satisfaction even from losses, or from battles in which I deal a relatively small amount of damage. And I think the reason for this is the core of why I enjoy this game- the deliberate, often slow paced decision making it promotes, and the sense of understanding the risks and returns of a situation, given the layout of islands, the capabilities of my ship relative to that of the enemy, and the capabilities of the allies around me. I will be perfectly satisfied with a battle, even when I get defeated quickly, as long as I feel as if that outcome was a predictable risk that I understood perfectly before making one of several choices, all of which I understood equally well.

This is partially why I usually enjoy middle to higher tiered gameplay more, because as damage output increases faster relative to defence as the tiers progress, the consequences of decisions, both good and bad, by both you and the enemy team, become more and more dramatic.

That all said, I may just like this game for the simple fact that the Derzki exists.

I have always been a history buff.

Growing up, I went through all of my Grandfather's National Geographics. The ones that really held my interest were the ones that contained the shipwrecks, both sail and modern.

And then I discovered the Titanic. Because of the Titanic I took note of Robert Ballard's name. Thus when his name came up in regards to another sunken ship, I took notice. That ship: Bismarck.

From there I started reading more about warship history, from WW2 going back to WW1, to further back and the American Civil War.

Eventually when I got a good computer, I started playing the naval battle sims, such as the Great Navel Battles series, and Fighting Steel.

But for a number of years, there were no new naval battle sims, you had land and air warfare sims, but nothing for the sea.

And then I saw a Youtube video that showed closed beta testing of this game, and I immediatly took note on when open beta would begin.........

My dad used to have all these books and magazines about WWII. Stories about the battles, ships, tanks, planes, people. I grew up on that so I loved WWII history as well. I used to make models when I was a kid, but plastic models don't do well when you try to do a more realistic re-enactment. :)  So this is perfect. I get to have the ships, look at the gorgeous models and read up on the history of other countries besides the US. This is like being a kid again.

The game itself is pretty good. It's simple and easy to understand. I also like warship design, even though i'm not a specialist of the genre.

IMO the only thing that give the game a bad image is the playerbase, potato and WG policies.

-Playerbase: the game contain so much salt compared to other game

-Potato: being a potato isn't the issue. The problem is that you find them at all tier constantly, even at high tier where you're supposed to know at least the basics

-WG : they say "No we'll never do this" during QNA then they do the opposite in the game.

My other naval game is Command: Modern Naval and Air Operations.  Before that was 2 or 3 versions of Harpoon.

I've also studied/read about World War II since I was about 10 years old, and I'm 48 now...  (hobby, not academically)

On the historical angle, it's just fun to get to 'drive' the ships that I read about.  And yes, this includes the WWI and inter-war ships as well.  The naval races are part of a proper study of the origins of WWII anyway; I guess WWI applies to some extent as well.  Naval combat in the age of armored ships is interesting anyway.

Also, another angle is that I don't much care for a lot of PvP.  It gets too personal, when people spit on you when you're dead, or whatever.  Just rubs me wrong.   Sure, you die in that kind of PvP.  You kill others too.  No need to spit on the corpse or piss on their grave.  YMMV.

However, for whatever reason, vehicle (planes, ships, tanks) PvP seems to insulate me from that layer of well, for a lack of better word, in-your-face hatred that some competitive PvPers always seem to bring along.  I just prefer not to even inhabit the same game as people like that.  I'm sure there are some in WoT/WoWS/WoWP/WT/etc, but's not as visble and/or blatant in these games as it is in the FPS genre or fantasy PvP games.

The history angle is what got me interested in WoT originally, as well.  It took me a good year to get over to ships, but I generally enjoy the game play a lot more here.

I also built models and did a lot of reading on WW2 from an early age. Got a congressional appt to go to Annapolis, but bailed on the process when I confirmed that I was colorblind and wouldn’t be able to fly.

WG’s games have filled a nice niche for me.  I think my first war game was a turn-based tank combat game on floppy for my Commodore 64 (yes, I am in my 40’s, too)...

For me when I was in the Navy my goal was too command my own Cruiser one work my way up from Enlisted to Officer and such and get my own Cruiser. Unfortunately war and life changed that goal so the game is the closet I can get to commanding a Cruiser's but I do love doing it and making other who think they now suffer case and point image where a Monarch did worse than I did as I literally had to run from one side of the map do work get a kill and run to the other side of the map and do work and get kill and watched the poor Monarch TK one of our own. But it mainly to live the one goal I had in the Navy to command my own Cruiser play with good friends from when I was in the Navy and meet in the world and have a good time when they are on and able too.

I play because I enjoy the game, believe it or not, been at it for a bit. I enjoy the pace probably more than anything else and I like boats.
