She's on sale right now, and 30% off.

As is: Alabama, Scharnhorst, Prince Eugen, Leningrad. Just in case you all missed that.

I had Atlanta, and got Bama, and Leningrad in boxes yesterday.  Now I'm mulling Scharnhorst.

Scharnhorst is pretty fun, plus she’s something different. She can drive you mad with her accuracy sometimes but overall a good ship.

Well, since she has the same guns as Graf Spee, I'm hopeful I can do fairly well.

Almost the same guns. Few minor differences. But if you can do well with Spee's guns, should be fine. And great armor of German BBs and torps.

Best played as an overgrown cruiser with a lot of armor. HE at anything angled or heavy armor, AP at broadside anything. Especially at close range. Those 11s will rip right through anything 10km or shorter broadside.

Just watch out. Your armor is not impenetrable.

I love citting overconfident Scharnhorsts who don't know about their own armor's soft spots and think they can charge/torpedo my Nagato.

I angle 30 degrees and all you can do is overpen my bow while I set you on fire till I close the range, then you die.

Too many over confident Nagatos and Colorados find this out the hard way.

Many thanks for pointing this out.  I was looking to buy an Atlanta back when they were available around Thanksgiving but spent too long trying to figure out how to change my country of residence and missed my opportunity.  Glad to see them available again.  Now to decide if I am buying one outright or buying some Christmas crates first.

On the other hand, a couple of Scharnhorsts have tried to brawl with Texas, and lost.  Maybe they didn't know what they were doing, but I was still afloat and they weren't!  Think it's because of stuff like that I don't get all bent out of shape over 2 tier differences.  I love to smack BBs who aren't paying attention in my Graf Spee.  They're watching for me to set them on fire, and all of a sudden they get pens or even citadels right through the belt, and those hurt!

I'm just saying it's a good ship but not god mode. Your comments facilitate the same foolish god complex KMS battleship captains seem to have which allows my Yamato to farm citadels off Kurfursts.

I've punched 14k citadel holes through plenty of angled Scharnhorsts with those 41cm guns.

It's a good ship. Just know that it's still capable of being penetrated.

And I've even managed to take out a cocky Iowa or two with a Scharnhorst. Just gotta maximize what you can do and minimize the risks. Texas can be a nasty customer if you let your guard down and go full broadside on them.

I find keep the point of the bow away from the enemy and more often than not, when they try to hit the bow, they end up smacking off that thick 70mm belt that runs almost up to the bow.

Oh I know. Why I try to utilize that thick belt armor portion that runs almost all the way to the bow. Straight bow on, 406 can overmatch. And at longer ranges, that deck armor doesn't mean squat.

Meaning I try to get up close and personal where I have good belt armor and force a turning dogfight.

Belive me, I've made quite a few Scharnhorsts cry in Colorado, Nagato and NC. Just gotta know where and when to engage them.

On a sort-of-funny note, I keep an eye on my son (14).  He *loves* to brawl in battleships, but he really likes the Germans.  Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Bismarck.   He loved his Colorado, too.  He keeps me up to date on what works really well, and the don't even try stuff....

That's the thing. There's a soft spot near the bow where the belt ends but the forward magazine is not protected. It's especially easy to hit when Scharnhorst is angled. It's quite small and I don't hit it every time, but I know where to put shells to make it happen.

It's actually easier for me to hit citadel spaces on Gneisnau/Scharnhorst than it is to hit them on Bayern or even Konig using the same 41cm guns.

That or I aim higher and pop their bow turrets with overpens. They hate that.

EDIT: The trick is to not allow them to create a "turning dogfight", but to force it to chase you. Scharnhorst is faster and will overtake Nagato or Colorado-- but make them work for it, make them pay for it with their health pool. And if they angle to avoid bow-in citadels, you know where to punch them. Oftentimes they'll give up after losing too much... Or they'll remain committed and either lose in the eventual joust or not even make it to joust in the first place.

It seems that there is a crazy amount of ships at a discount in the tech tree, I may have to think about a good Tier 8 to use in Ranked this coming season.

Already have plenty. Chappyev, Tirpitz, Bismarck, NC, Mogami, Lo Yang, Atago, Takao. I think I am good.

So are all tech tree premiums.  Up to tier 5 is 50% off, tier 6-7 seems to be 30% off, and tier 8 seems to be 15% off.  Good deals that I think are being overlooked due to the santa boxes.

Yeah, if I decide to join the fray, I've got Bama, Kutuzov, Atago, Lo Yang, and I think Kidd is VIII as well.

It’s funny, the extra turret seems to make a lot of difference to me. The guns feel like they shoot faster (even thought they don’t) plus you have 3 more shot filling up your dispersion pattern. Being a more robust ship also does hurt either.
